These Underground Beauty Brands Are Some of the Country's Best Kept Secrets
It's safe to say there's a thrill that comes with discovering a new, underground skincare brand. Even more so when the said skincare brand works. Here at Byrdie Australia HQ, we make it our prerogative to seek out the best skincare, and sometimes that means swapping out our standard routines to try those brands you might not be super familiar with. This month, we did just that and sampled seven little-known skincare products so that we could share our thoughts. All natural and made in Australia, we were seriously impressed with each and every one.

Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Flash Perfection Exfoliating Treatment ($60)
Okay, so it's fair to say that Sand & Sky aren't exactly unheard of, seeing as the brands' clay mask pretty much broke the internet when it launched. The sister duo behind it all are fast becoming an Australian beauty-force to be reckoned with, and the brand's latest launch, the Flash Prefecting Exfoliating Treatment, is going to be huge, in our honest opinion. Enriched with bamboo, macadamia seed, and AHA-rich fruit extracts, the clay-based treatment refines texture and draws out debris. Good luck getting one before they sell out.
Karen Murrell Lipstick in Coral Dawn ($30)
Karen Murrell's eponymous brand specialises in natural lipsticks that don't compromise on performance. Designed in New Zealand and produced in Australia, the formulas are creamy and hydrating, but with a high colour payoff. Coral Dawn is a bright shade of watermelon that looks amazing paired with a wash of gold eye shadow.
Coast Sydney Botanicals Nephelium Strengthen 2 Moisturiser ($49)
From finance to skincare, brand founder Wei saw a gap in the market for high-quality but natural skincare, thus Coast Sydney Botanicals was born. Hydrating without being greasy, the Nephelium Strengthening Moisturiser contains green tea, rice protein, and rambutan to calm troubled, blemish-prone skin.
Lux Aestiva Prickly Pear Oil ($46)
Lux Aestiva is the brainchild of a husband and wife duo from North Queensland, and boasts a range of natural products housed in chic packaging. This oil is light but nourishing and actively works to brighten dull skin tone. Also, it smells like warm, spicy apple pie.
Dr Roebucks Perky Collagen Boosting Serum ($75)
If ingredients like of niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and retinol don't suck you in, the brand story will: Kim and Zoe are Australian sisters who both suffered eczema and dry, sensitive skin as kids. So, their parents (who were doctors, by the way) went to the compound chemist, formulated them a line of gentle but effective skincare, and once it worked, they decided to sell it. The rest, as they say, is history (it's stocked in Sephora in the states, FYI). This particular serum is designed to tighten, hydrate, and brighten the skin.
