Watch: 3 Beauty Looks You Can Create Using Products You Already Own

While I find the beauty world fascinating, I tend to stick to the same simple makeup look day in, day out. I might add a red lip for the weekend but that’s about as daring as I get. If I'm being completely honest, my reluctance to experiment really comes down to thinking I don’t have the right tools or know the techniques to try the trends. I prefer to invest in quality mascara, bronzer and everyday foundations that can multi-task as well as I do; which means I'm not hugely interested in filling up my cosmetics case with a whole bunch of products.

So when chat around the office turned to directional looks that could be created using only the basics, my ears pricked up. Could I be a real "beauty girl" after all? And, could I wear a look?

To test the idea, I set makeup artist Jessica Diez a challenge. I tasked her with creating three runway-inspired spring makeup looks, each one chic enough to make a statement yet simple enough to apply in the back of an Uber. Because that is real life. Being the good sport she is, Diez demonstrated each look while our production crew filmed her in real time. The result? A video I’ve now watched at least five times, gleaning every tip I can.

While I’m now much more inspired to play around with my makeup (I tried look two last weekend), there are two important learnings I’ll be sticking to when I experiment next.

The first, investing in brands you trust to deliver high quality results is non-negotiable. And second, every look is better when created on a perfect base. We chose Elizabeth Arden’s Flawless Finish Everyday Perfection Bouncy Makeup ($50) as that perfect base, and for good reason. It wakes up dull, tired skin with ingredients including peppermint, ginseng and caffeine; and the bouncy gel formula mimics your skin's own texture, creating a more natural look.

Watch our video below to see all three spring looks in under four minutes, using Elizabeth Arden to create a perfect base.
