Sienna Miller Just Proved "The Rachel" Was, Is, and Always Will Be Iconic
There's always plenty of room in our hearts for a quality slice of nostalgia. Especially when it involves two of our favourite women in Hollywood (ahem, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Aniston) and one of the most beloved female characters to grace the silver screen: Rachel Green of Friends. Excited yet?
Last week, in celebration of UNICEF's Project Lion launch in New York City, Sienna Miller made her always highly anticipated red carpet appearance with an even more admirable beauty aesthetic than usual. As Vogue reported, she seemed to be channelling the forever-iconic haircut dubbed The Rachel, which Friends actress Jennifer Aniston made famous in the mid-1990s a few years into the show's debut. Miller reworked the look, characterised by piece-y, face-framing layers, perky body, and lots and lots of shine, to convey the same wistful nostalgia circa Rachel but with fresh 2018 updates to keep the style more current, and you know, Sienna.
For instance, instead of wearing her hair with Rachel's signature deep-set part and eye-grazing side-sweep, Miller parted her strands straight down the centre and offered up longer, collarbone-length layers in lieu of Rachel's chin-length ones. Both looks are still characterised by glossy shimmer and bouncy body, but Miller's manages to embody a refined retro feel that's perfect for the summer—and present day. That being said, after gazing at and comparing the two looks, we couldn't help but experience a quick pang of nostalgia for some of the most '90s hair looks. Thus, we dove into the deep dark archives of Getty to find the best hair moments from the first few years of Friends, courtesy of Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow. If you have a weakness for tendrils, choppy layers, braids, bangs, and more, keep scrolling.
Ahhh, baby Jennifer—pictured pre-Rachel during the first season of Friends circa 1994.
Right before she transitioned to the full-on Rachel that we often associate with the character (i.e. roughly shoulder-length), Aniston had a kind of pre-Rachel, if you will. This is the look that's truly giving us current Sienna Miller vibes.
In 1995, Aniston had made the full transition, working the cropped, piece-y style which would forever define her character. Enter "The Rachel."
We always appreciated Phoebe Buffay's whimsical hair looks, as portrayed by Lisa Kudrow. Pre-clips, -ponytails, and -bangs, she looked more understated during the first phase of filming.
Here's Kudrow as Phoebe at her finest—super-long braids and side bangs to accent back in 1994.
By 1995, Kudrow had updated her look with piece-y, eye-grazing fringe and lots and lots of layers synonymous with '90s style.
Both Monica and Rachel were the queens of the clips—be it one large banana clip tucked in the back or a sprinkling of minnies (also in back). Courteney Cox exemplifies the look to a T here on a 1994 red carpet.
Cox's short and sweet layers were the quintessential juxtaposition to Aniston's longer ones prior to her signature chop. Both of which translated effortlessly on-screen and off.
Interestingly, Cox as Monica had her own version of "The Rachel," as shown here in 1996.
And all together now…
From Kudrow's thick fringe to Aniston's signature "Rachel" to Cox's short and sweet bangs, we couldn't find a better photo to epitomise the trio's best '90s hair moments.
