No Botox Required: This ‘Face Lift In a Bottle’ Serum Is a Bestseller in Japan

by Byrdie

In our series, The Science of Beauty, we're researching the making of great beauty products. While we've talked about the textures, scents, and efficacy of our favourite formulas in our Reviewed series, this one will feed the other side of the brain—the side we perhaps haven't tapped into since chemistry class. We'll talk science, experiments, and the ingredients that make each product work, with experts in each specific field. Then we'll check back in with our favourite hair and makeup artists to get a breakdown on how to best use the products once they're out of the lab and back in our bathrooms.

We've taken a deep dive into the technology behind volumising hair products and read up on Accutane. Now, we're turning our attention to Estée Lauder's groundbreaking new product Perfectionist Pro, dubbed a 'face lift in a bottle'. The new high-science active serum had an early release in Japan and has been a bestseller in the country ever since, thanks to fast anti-ageing and skin tightening results. So what do the women of Japan know that we don't? We explored what makes this serum different to the rest. Spoiler alert: it includes hero ingredients like Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, AHAs, and hyaluronic acid, that can be (surprisingly) as effective as more invasive treatments in just a short time frame.

What's In Perfectionist pro?

You know the brand, but did you know that the Estée Lauder Research team are pioneers in the beauty industry? Every Estée Lauder skin care product is deeply grounded in research and science, but this latest release takes it up a serious notch: the Perfectionist Pro Rapid Form + Lift Treatment is the result of more than a decade of research. Specifically, scientists looked at the skin support structures required to combat a loss of elasticity in three critical zones: cheeks, jawline and smile lines.

As we age, collagen in our skin breaks down (but you knew that already); Estée Lauder scientists precision-engineered a peptide called Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, bottled it, and called it Perfectionist Pro... and oh boy, it's a goodie. This is the kind of active ingredient and high-tech skincare that you could previously only get your hands on with a dermatologist’s prescription but is now much more accessible.

How Does It Work?

Let's get down to the science of it all: Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is a powerful active peptide ingredient that stimulates our natural production of collagen-I, a specific protein found in more than 85% of facial skin. It helps to build the scaffolding structure that keeps your face, well, up. The formula itself was designed to create more of this collagen-producing protein that allows skin to repair itself; the essential cell turnover responsible for maintaining elasticity, plumpness, and softening fine lines and wrinkles.

The key active is supported by powerful ingredients you'll recognise, combining to create a holistic, multi-targeted product. Hyaluronic acid plumps and hydrates for that juicy skin effect, while AHAs and glucosamine promote cell turnover to deliver gentle-yet-noticeable skin resurfacing and brighten your face.

What Are the Results?

It's a formulation that aims to re-surface, re-build, and re-fill, and clinical testing proves it can deliver. Of course we love a product that makes a difference after just a few days, but one that continues to generate results will quickly cement its place in our skincare routines. So while Perfectionist Pro can plump and firm skin in as little as three days, after two weeks the high-concentration of active ingredients gives results similar to far more invasive (and expensive!) treatments. And tests of 308 women showed after 8 weeks, the skin's visible lift increased by 49 per cent. Sculpting and smoothing, sans needles? Honestly, just take our money now.
