A Parisian It Girl Shares Her Love for Solange, Vegan Food, and a Red Lip
It’s here: 31 days. 31 cities. 31 perspectives. Each day in the month of March, we’re profiling an inspiring woman from across the world and asking her to share her beauty routine, products, and wellness secrets. Consider this your firsthand look into the beauty traditions and cultures of your beauty-obsessed counterparts from Thailand, Nigeria, and more (and don’t forget to check our Instagram for a beauty-themed global takeover each day). The five skincare products you can’t live without:
The five hair products you can’t live without:
I like SheaMoisture. I use the Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo ($12). I use a lot of pure shea butter that people bring me from Africa. I use castor oil too. I braid my hair, put a lot of oil or shea butter in my hair, and leave it in for days.
The five makeup products you can’t live without:
I don’t put on too much makeup. I like wearing MAC red lipstick sometimes—I’ll just put on lipstick and nothing else. I also really like MAC Opal Beach Lipstick ($49), which is a nude tone. In the winter, I always put a little bit of blush on to have a better look. I wear MAC Blush Peaches ($32). I don’t put on foundation powder because it hides my freckles.
What countries and cultures do you find most inspirational when it comes to beauty and why?
It can be your own! I love the hair, art, and culture in Africa—the creativity, the form, and the crown is amazing.
The most popular beauty trends in your country right now:
I think Parisian girls are really naturally beautiful without having to wear a lot of makeup. You’ll maybe see women wearing a good lipstick and that’s it!
Favourite traditional beauty secret from your country:
Shea butter and castor oil.
Where you buy beauty products:
It depends on which products. For my hair, I go to an area called Chateau D’eau in Paris. For my skin, I go to organic shops or to a pharmacy where you can buy Topicrème and Bioderma.
What does “healthy living” mean to you?
A healthy life is paying attention to one’s body and mind. You should take time to stretch and do exercises. Take the time to learn about how your body works and what you should eat. Take the time to make yourself a good, healthy, and balanced meal. You also have to be able to sit down, relax, breathe, and meditate. And drink a lot of water to hydrate your body.
How do you practice “self-care”?
Take time for yourself. Be sure to eat well, stretch, relax, massage your body by yourself or go and get a massage.Take a bath, if you have one, with natural essences.
What’s your favourite way to stay active and why?
I love biking. In Paris, I only move with my bike. I got a Brompton bicycle. It’s really nice for practicing and easy to ride. I like to walk too. I walk a lot when it’s summer in Paris.
What’s your favorite healthy meal?
For the summer, I like raw meals. I like raw rolls with creamy peanut and coconut sauce. Or I like salad boats with crunchy romaine lettuce and a lot of different veggies inside with a tahini avocado sauce. In the winter, I love soup. I like minestrone or vegan harira with a lot of cilantro and a squeeze of lemon. I like Afro-Caribbean meals too because it's where I come from. I die for a Mafé (peanut Senegalese stew) or an Ital stew with lots of veggies, okra, and plantain banana. To eat well, you can come to my vegan place, Jah Jah by Le Tricycle 11 Rue des Petites Écuries or Le Tricycle 51 Rue de Paradis.
What are the most popular wellness trends in your country right now?
We have a lot of Hammams (steam baths) in Paris. It’s really good way to purify your body. I haven’t tried it yet, but I have to. For sports, everyone talks about Dynamo in Paris, which is indoor cycling. Or you can go to the park Buttes Chaumont to exercise.
