How the Models at Rodarte Keep Their Ultra-Matte Lips From Drying Out

Deven Hopp

When you’re doing a deep super-matte lip, you have to commit to the look. The colour needs to be even and saturated, the lines need to be clean, and the lips should still look like lips—not like a drawn-on cartoon version of lips. At least that’s how James Kaliardos, lead makeup artist for Nars Cosmetics at Rodarte F/W 16, sees it. Which is why he took extra care when applying Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($39) in Train Bleu on the models at today's show.

His tip for statement-making lips? Always start with a light layer of foundation blended at the outer corners to make your lips pop. Kaliardos prefers to set them first rather than outlining the lips with concealer after applying the colour, because concealer can sometimes lighten the edges. Noted. But his tip that really impressed wasn’t about lip prep but rather the finishing touch. Scroll down to find out what it is!
