One of the most glorious aspects of being a beauty editor is the number of products we get to take for a test drive. Sure, we'd be lying if we said we weren't constantly surrounded by a mountain of bottles and tubes both in the office and in our apartments, but we approach that mountain eagerly, hiking boots in tow.
Each month, Byrdie editors will be sharing the products within that mountain that stood out the most. Maybe it was a peel that made our skin glow like J.Lo's or a hair mask that brought our dry strands back to life. Whatever it was, we're eager to share it with you so you can experience the same bliss that we did. Take a look at our favourites below.
"The name doesn't lie. After just one application of this addictively lightweight—yet magically moisturising—night gel cream, I was hooked. Or perhaps I should say cuddled and cocooned. One part lightweight (hence the 'gel' part of the name) and one part luxuriously moisturizing (the 'cream'), this nighttime treatment from Dermalogica feels like the ultimate nightcap and a self-care ritual in and of itself. Not only does it seal in your bedtime skincare with a kiss of nourishment and brightening benefits to boot (thanks to exotic ingredients like Wu Zhu Yu, tamarind seed, and Australian kakadu extract), it smells like heaven on earth thanks to beauty sleep-inducing notes like French lavender, patchouli, and sandalwood. It's essentially a skin-improving lullaby in a bottle, and I'm telling everyone who will listen that they need it in their life."
"I discovered this serum on a recent hotel stay with the brand and was completely blown away by the immediate smoothing effect. I applied the serum before bed and immediately noticed a cooling, tightening sensation. My friend who was with me was actually the one who pointed it out, saying something along the lines of 'Um, this serum just smoothed all my wrinkles away.' We looked in the mirror, and sure enough, our complexions looked smooth, radiant, and slightly dewy—any wrinkles or crow's feet seemed to literally have melted away. It's a unique product—I'll be writing a full review soon!"
"To me, there's no higher honor than when another Byrdie editor compliments me on my makeup, so when assistant editor Maya told me she loved this lip colour on me after I swiped it on at my desk, I knew it was a keeper. It's a matte peachy pink with a balm texture that doesn't feel drying in the slightest, and it never cracks or feathers—instead, it just fades gradually until you reapply. The shade itself is what really spoke to me. I'm normally a fan of rosy pinks or pinkish nudes, so veering into peach territory was new for me (is that the most beauty-editor thing to say, ever?), but ever since I've used it, I haven't looked back. It's super flattering on my light-medium skin tone with warm undertones and somehow makes me look like I've been in the sun (in a good way). It's officially my go-to lip colour for spring. Now if only the weather would hurry up and catch up."
"Is it possible for your skin to be seriously shook by a new product? Because my pores are so happy with me right now. I can't thank the skin angels enough for dreaming up this facial oil that has literally made my skin glow like no other. I'm not even kidding—I don't think I've ever gone through a bottle faster than this one. My face, specifically my cheek and forehead area, are eternally dehydrated. For this reason, I've always been drawn to face oils because I need something heavier in the hydration category. This presents a tricky balance because I don't want to layer on any product that's too thick and ends up clogging my pores. This marula oil is the perfect medium. I apply it every morning and night religiously because I look forward to the moment it transforms the texture of my skin to silk. Okay, not really, but my skin feels as soft as my silk sheets afterward, and that's all that matters."
"I'm really loving Tatcha's new primer, and this is coming from someone who A) categorically dislikes primer and B) is looking to cut back on my makeup routine rather than add new products. But it gives my skin this beautiful silky finish and feels so lightweight. It also blurs imperfections and evens out my skin tone. Lately, I've been wearing it with just a little bit of concealer and clear brow gel—that's it. It makes for a totally low-key look that still feels polished."
