The New MAC Collection Fashion Girls Are Into Right Now
The team behind MAC's limited edition colour collections certainly have a knack for keeping their finger on the pulse. Aside from products inspired by blockbuster films (like this Cinderella-themed eye gloss), and charity collaborations (see: Ariana Grande's Viva Glam Lipstick), the brand's creatives regularly tap unexpected sources for inspo. For instance, MAC recently released a range influenced by Mexican-American icon Selena Quintanilla. A makeup collection created in homage to a niche figure might seem iffy, but not only did it make the singer's fans crazy happy, it also tapped into the current '90s resurgence. Demand was so high it sold out Stateside in a matter of hours. (FYI, the range is still available locally via Maccosmetics.com.au.) In a nutshell: MAC knows what's up. Next up on the brand's launch schedule? A fashion girl-approved line that's bound to sell out real fast. Inspired by legendary provocateur Helmut Newton, the collection references the "erotically charged and elegant work" of the influential fashion photographer.
Let's take a closer look.
MAC Studio Nail Lacquer in (L-R) Berlin, Monte Carlo, Call Time ($24)
The Nail Lacquer in Berlin is deep and dark, a classic crimson option for anyone currently stuck on basic black. Monte Carlo is what I'd call a retro red—it wouldn't have looked out of place painted on Marilyn Monroe's digits. Call Time is my favourite shade personally, and not just because I can never go past a neutral. (Wardrobe options = endless.) A creamy shade of greige, it's surprisingly flattering on all skin tones.
MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in (L-R) High Heels, Self Portrait, Chateau M ($46)
A trio of perfect reds in MAC's signature "liquid suede" formula, there's a shade for every skin tone. Chateau M is Merlot in lipstick form—a deep shade of crimson with lush raspberry undertones. High Heels is a little punchier; a dose of pink pigment gives it the power to pep up tired skin. Self Portrait is what to reach for when you want drama. A statement mulberry hue, it's (obviously) the perfect selfie shade.
MAC Eye Shadow x 4 in Point 'N' Shoot ($65)
If you can find a more wearable collection of eye shadows out there, let me know. This palette is made up of mostly matte textures, with one chocolate brown satin shadow thrown in for good measure. Essentially, it has everything you need to create both a casual day look, as well as something more striking. If you're thinking of going as a black and white character for Halloween (one of Helmut's iconic fashion images, perhaps?), it'll serve you well there too.
The MAC x Helmut Newton collection is now available for a limited time only.
