This Is How Models Do No-Makeup Makeup, According to Lindsay Ellingson
After traveling the world for more than a decade and working with some of the best beauty experts, I’ve learned quite a few backstage beauty tips and tricks that still help in my day-to-day life. If, like me, you’re busier than ever (I mean really, who isn’t?) and last thing you want to do as a self-proclaimed lazy girl is spend hours toiling over what products to buy and how to use them—and that’s before you even put it on your face. Here are four of my favourite beauty hacks to keep me fresh even when I’m super-busy.
Keep scrolling for four multi-purpose hacks, including nailing no-makeup makeup, and how to pull them off.
Hack #1: Choose products that do double-duty
Whether you’re packing products into your makeup purse, carry on, or clutch, you don’t need separate blushes, illuminators, bronzers, and concealers taking up precious space. Instead, find multi-purpose products that combine these different functions into one item. Wander Beauty’s On-The-Glow Blush and Illuminator ($63) is my ultimate multi-tasker. With a lip and cheek formula on one side and illuminator on the other, you can nail that “off-duty model” look with one product. The creamy formula is also easy to apply (fingers are fine).
I also love a multi-purpose highlighter. I use Wander Beauty’s Catch The Light Highlighter ($38) to highlight my cheekbones, but also as an eyeshadow on my lower lashline, and even to highlight my legs. (I run it down the middle of my shins so that my legs look slim, elongated and glowy, something I learned backstage at Victoria’s Secret.) You can also apply it to your decolletage and shoulders.
Hack #2: Skip non-essential steps
I’m all for skipping traditional makeup steps by combining them into one. Take your lashes for example. Forget the expense of lash extensions, or the time and technique of using an eyelash curler—just upgrade your mascara. Wander Beauty’s Unlashed Mascara ($36) delivers volume, curl, length, and definition in one swipe, and it’s water-resistant. Press the convex side of the brush into the base of your lashes and wiggle up for maximum curl.
Hack #3: Work smarter, not harder
Here’s my secret to using concealer to fake eight hours of sleep without having to layer on different products—just remember “V” is key. Apply a full coverage, matte concealer (like Wander Beauty’s Dualist Concealer, $43) under your eyes from the inner corners, taking it down the side of your nose and up towards your cheekbones. Gently blend with a foundation sponge to blur the edges. You’ll find it looks much more natural than the traditional half-circle shape and takes less time to do. Anther tip is to mix highlighter into your primer to instantly illuminate your complexion. It’s easy and cuts the need to apply both separately.
Hack #4: Use your fingers in place of brushes
When you’re in a pinch for time, you can’t be using a brush for every different product. Use your hands instead. For cream blush or illuminator, use your ring finger to both apply and blend into the skin. Fingers work for concealer as well, just be sure to blend thoroughly. The warmth of your hands actually helps diffuse the formula more than a brush would—double win.
