I Tried Lancôme's Buzzy Waterproof Mascara and Didn't Recognise My Own Lashes
As beauty editors, we get bombarded with a ton of new products every day (we know—tough life). Reviewed is a series where we report on some of the best products we’ve tried. Whether it’s a drugstore lipstick that lasted all day or a hand cream that saved us this winter, you’ll find all of our favourites in this column. Enjoy!
I am so picky about mascara. Let's just get that out in the open. I'm not out here singing the praises of every product that comes across my desk, which is why when I first tried Lancôme's original Monsieur Big Mascara—the non-waterproof iteration—I wasn't expecting anything astounding. That is until I applied it my lashes and they practically reached my eyebrows. That mascara works. But I found it also flakes. What usually comes with intense volume and tons of length is that pesky smudge below your lash line and flakes every time you look in the mirror during a night out.
That being said, I was ecstatic when the brand launched this pick, a waterproof product to make up for all the smudging of the last one. But would it really work? And would I be able to remove it without ripping out my eyelashes? I had to try it to find out.
The large, lush brush is still the same, transferring product with tons of volume (and somehow no clumps). It has this unique shape—soft, wavy bristles that are made to deliver the right amount of product. Though, the claim is this one "features a sweat-proof, smudge proof formula that glides onto lashes like silk and delivers exceptional volume for up to 24 hours of wear. This waterproof mascara doesn't require touch-ups and doesn't flake." Could it be true? Have I finally found my mascara match?
I applied the mascara in the morning, ready to do check-ins throughout the day on the smudge level. I could immediately tell it was super creamy but waxy, so you can continue to build volume, length, and heft with every stroke. This mascara is serious—like, when you apply it, people will notice. I got asked if I was wearing fake eyelashes a total of nine times that day.
My first check-in was a few hours later, and there were no smudges whatsoever. Amazing, I thought to myself and went on with my day. The rest of the day went pretty similarly. I'd check in and notice zero black mess below my eyes. Then, the real test was after a humid, sweaty commute on a crowded subway. Still, even then, my lashes were intact. I chalked it up to a big-time victory and began to remove my makeup. So here's the thing. It was difficult to remove. But isn't that the trade-in for mascara that stays in place all day? I love it, and I'm going to continue loving it until the very last drop.
