Kim Kardashian on Eating Her Placenta: “I Totally Recommend it!”
Kim Kardashian West has revealed in a post on her website that she had her placenta turned into supplements. According to News.com.au, she shared a picture of the purple capsules along with the reason she decided to trial them—to ward off postpartum depression: “I heard so many stories when I was pregnant with North of mums who never ate their placenta with their first baby and then had postpartum depression," Kardashian West wrote. "But then when they took the pills with their second baby, they did not suffer from depression!" Interesting.
Kim isn’t the first celebrity to try placentophagy (January Jones and Gabby Hoffman are two others), but studies suggest any positive effects experienced while ingesting placenta might be nothing more than a placebo effect. Researchers at Northwestern University reviewed ten studies on the subject and found there’s no evidence that eating your placenta can help with depression. The review also concluded that doctors probably don’t know enough about the potential risks to recommend the practice.
If you are pregnant, folic acid supplements like Blackmores' Folate ($9) are said to be beneficial to both mum and baby.
