According to Kelly Gale, This Workout Combination Is the Perfect VS Runway Prep
One look at Kelly Gale is all you need to understand why she just walked her fourth Victoria's Secret Runway Show. Her glossy black hair and statuesque limbs are a picture of perfection, but it's at about 30 seconds into our interview that I understand just why Gale is so successful (and constantly re-booked). Gale trains like an athlete, and feeds her body a diet that's basically busting at the seams with nutrition. During our short (but juicy) interview at the Swarovski Rainbow Paradise launch (for which she was a special guest), Gale was candid when it came to sharing her workout regime, go-to lunch meal, and the green juice recipe she knocks back every morning.
Being a well-versed model, she's also savvy when it comes to incredible product recommendations (and any girl that loves Tom Ford as much as I do will always have a special place in my heart). Byrdie Australia: So how did you prep for the Victoria’s Secret Show?
Kelly Gale: I’m really healthy all year round, and I love to work out all of the time. But about eight weeks before the show, I really amp it up. I work out more, cut out all cheat meals, and try to be stricter than I normally would.
B: What does your day on a plate look like in the lead up to the show?
KG: For breakfast I have a green juice. I’ll add kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, two lemons and lots of ginger. I have that first thing before I go work out. When I get back, it’s closer to lunch (I work out for quite a long time in the morning). For lunch, I’ll have protein with veggies. I eat as much as I want; I don’t deprive myself, I just make sure everything I eat is super healthy. I like shrimp or scallops or white fish. Chicken breast is good too, as long as it’s lean. As far as vegetables go, I like pretty much anything. Dinner is often pretty similar to lunch.
B: And what about your pre-runway workout routine?
KG: I do Pilates and I box a lot. This was actually the first year that I didn’t work with a personal trainer before the show. It was exciting for me, because I noticed big results without a PT. Everyone seems to work out with an expensive trainer, but I’ve figured out that I don’t necessarily need to. I’ve learnt a lot from previous trainers, but I know what works for my body, and sometimes a trainer might not. They work with so many girls and body types, and everyone is different. I really enjoyed working out on my own terms this year.
As for Pilates, I go to Body by Simone. When it comes to cardio, I love to jump rope. I also do a lot of power walking. I walk really fast—like 8 km an hour, and I’ll do 20-30 km a day. I find Pilates, gym sessions, jump rope and power walking are a good mix of strength training, cardio and lengthening, which is exactly what I need in the lead-up to the show.
B: Can you describe the atmosphere backstage the Victoria’s Secret Show in only three words?
KG: Exciting—everyone is so excited. Nervous! I don’t really get nervous, but for some of the new girls, the nerves are definitely there. And… another word? Can I say exciting twice? There’s really no other way to explain it.
B: What’s the first thing you do every morning when you wake up?
KG: I drink one whole juiced lemon mixed in with cold water, and I’ll have another glass of water with apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. It doesn’t taste great to start with, but you get used to it. If I stop for whatever reason (like travelling), I find it’s harder to stomach when I get home.
B: So what five beauty products will you continue to buy, no matter what?
KG: Tom Ford has an amazing creamy contouring set that I love, it’s the Shade and Illuminate Set ($125). I use the Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream ($85) every morning and night—it’s the best. Coconut oil is a given. I’ll give you a tip though: I mix orange essential oil, cinnamon bark, and cypress oil in to my coconut oil. It doesn’t smell as good, but it’s amazing every night after my shower. It makes a huge difference when it comes to the firmness and glowiness of my skin.
B: What beauty tricks do you have when it comes to travelling?
KG: For me, it’s all about how I take care of myself before, during and after travelling. I make sure that I don’t eat any processed foods, and I drink a lot of water. I avoid junk food and the less than nutritious plane food. I’ll often eat before flying or bring my own snacks. When you travel a lot for work, it’s so necessary.
B: What makeup do you keep in your handbag for castings?
KG: I always have mascara. I like to try new ones, but I’ve tried a lot of duds, so always go back to my favourite by Tom Ford. It’s a really, really good one. I always have Murad lip balm ($47) with me too, because I have the driest lips ever.
