Exclusive: Getting Ready With Kate Mara for the Met Gala
Last night, celebrities, models, designers, and muses flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala (the event most people just call the Met Gala) and flaunted their most futuristic beauty looks for the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology”–themed event.
But what happens in those magic hours before a celeb arrives, preened and poised, on the red carpet? Short answer: a lot. We got an exclusive look at makeup artist Coleen Campbell-Olwell’s day as she prepped her client, the ever-elegant Kate Mara, for the Met Gala red carpet—or, what we like to call the most revered red carpet of the year.

Campbell-Lowell used Sisley’s Phyto-Khol Perfect Eyeliner ($65) in Navy, then used the silver shade in the brand’s Phyto 4 Ombres Eyeshadow Quad ($110) in Mystery and swept it across her entire lid. She swirled Smashbox’s LA Lights Blush ($46) on her cheeks, and finished with Sisley’s Long Lasting Lipstick ($65) in shade L32, a soft mauve.
