Exclusive: Inside My Beauty Routine, by Jessica Hart
Jessica Hart may call New York home—she’s been based there for almost a decade—but the mega-model remains a poster girl for quintessential Australian beauty. The launch of Hart's own line of natural beauty products, Luma Cosmetics, has only strengthened our love of her signature "no-makeup" makeup look (and brought us one step closer to replicating it ourselves!).
In this exclusive interview, Hart opens up to Byrdie about her beauty philosophy (natural = best), whether skincare or makeup matters most, and exactly how she creates that enviable glow. Keep reading for the insider intel on Hart’s entire beauty routine—from skincare to makeup, haircare and fragrance—plus the makeup tip she relies on every day.
Hi Byrdie readers! People think that because I prefer a natural makeup look I must rate skincare more than makeup, but I think both are really valuable. It’s vital that you look after your skin (which is why it was so important to me to create a line free from parabens, sulphates and mineral oils), but I also absolutely love the art of makeup and how it can make the most of your features. My beauty philosophy is: less is more. I believe in enhancing your natural beauty rather than covering it up. Keep scrolling for my favourite beauty products!
My morning skincare routine is pretty basic. I like Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner ($54), it's a spray so it’s super-easy to use. I also love other hydrating sprays like SK-II Mid-Day Miracle Essence ($75) and Nuface Optimizing Mist. I always apply Luma Cosmetics Tinted Moisturiser SPF15 ($25) as it includes a natural sunscreen, but in high-summer I need a little more protection so I add in a higher protection sunscreen. I’m using SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF50, right now.
I'm lucky with my skin, it’s usually pretty well behaved. I change up my products depending on how I feel and how my skin reacts to the changing seasons. In summer, I like Dr. Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream Light ($58) and in winter, I’ll use something a little heavier like La Mer Crème De La Mer ($225). For body year round, I like Dr. Hauschka Almond Soothing Cream ($47).
My makeup routine is really simple. After my tinted moisturiser, I pat Luma Cosmetics Illuminating Highlighter ($25) on my cheekbones, and finish off with Luma Cosmetics Sheer Lipstick in Nude Shimmer ($20). It’s quick—it usually only takes me a few minutes, total.
The best makeup tip I can give is determining whether you have more pink or yellow in your skin tone—it’s the best way to work out what shades suit your complexion. Something that suits everyone is luminser. I love that there are so many different ways you can use it to highlight and contour your face. I apply it to my brow bones, cheekbones and Cupid’s bow. If you’re wearing a dress or top that allows it, it's great on your collarbones and shoulders too.
I use a mix of shampoos and conditioners—I'm not fixed to any brand in particular. I'm constantly changing it up. It’s often a hotel brand because I’m always travelling. Kevin.Murphy Angel.Wash ($35) and Angel.Rinse ($36) are two of my favourites, though. I also love Klorane Extra Gentle Oat Milk Dry Shampoo ($14) because it’s so practical and quick.
I like to keep my hair simple so I don’t really use any styling tools. I throw it up in a top knot most of the time. I use Paul Frank & Co Dust ($28) to give it a bit of texture. Cutting in a fringe made styling my hair a little more time consuming, but it’s not too bad. I just use a hairdryer to blow my fringe downwards when it’s wet to keep it under control.
