This Foolproof Hair Hack is the Secret to Undone Waves

Lisa Patulny

Last night's David Jones A/W 16 Launch gave us an early peek into the trends we'll be wearing next season (if you haven't already, peep at these amazing custom lashes), but it also delivered a handy hair tip we can use right.this.second.

Backstage, Aveda's creative director Terri Robertson-Kirkwood explained to assembled beauty media that a new technique was needed to guarantee a similar look on each of the models. Describing the show's hair look as "raw and edgy", she then went on to reveal a foolproof hack for creating that much-loved but tricky-to-DIY favourite: undone waves. Convinced it couldn't possibly be that easy, I tried it myself this morning. And guess what? It worked. So what is this magic method that ensures that elusive cool-girl texture time after time? Keep scrolling to find out.

1. Spritz hair all over with Aveda's Witch Hazel Hairspray ($30), then twist chunky sections in a clockwise direction with your fingers.

2. Working one twisted section at a time, hold the hair taut and slide a hot tong (with the barrel open) up and down the length. Continue until you've done your whole head.

3. To finish, use your tong to lightly clamp the hair around the crown for extra movement and body. If hair looks limp or flat, spritz Aveda's Shampure Dry Shampoo ($30) from roots to ends to add an airy quality.
