Finally: The Secret to Creating Glossy Lids That Don't Smear

If you've ever tried to replicate a '70s-style glossy lid, you'll know just how easy it is to go from "disco fever" to "sweaty mess". You don't have to do much to get there... except blink.

With '70s beauty emerging as a solid trend at the spring summer '16 shows (see: Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenburg, Gareth Pugh and Burberry), our friends at Elle quizzed Hannah Murray, the makeup artist behind the faces at Topshop Unique, for her secret to getting gleaming lids to stay put.

Murray recommends lining top and bottom outer corners with a smudgy black liner, then tapping a shimmery shadow (like Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eye Shadow, $48) just on the mobile lid. Next—the trick—dabbing a teensy bit of lip balm on the top centre of each lid only. "You don't need to spread it out," Murray explains, "because it will naturally move towards the corners [of the eye], and blur a bit with the black [liner]." Who knew the secret was so simple?
