Just Lightened Your Strands? 7 Tips You Need to Know
Opting for lighter—and subsequently, beachy-er—strands during the summer is about as common as trading your skinny jeans and scarves for cut-off shorts and floral minis. It’s just a fact of life, so if you’re going to do it, you should do it right. And unfortunately, for anyone who has gone lighter and experienced the dryness and change in hair texture that comes with it, it can be a tricky one to navigate. Rather than put your hair in your go-to topknot yet another day, why not heal your strands and let your (chemically) lightened hair fly?
We caught up with master colorist Joel Warren, co-founder of Warren-Tricomi salons and a go-to for celebs like Jessica Alba and Kate Beckinsale, and asked him to share his best colour-saving tips. From pool prep to special shower heads, keep scrolling for seven tips you should know!
“Any time you colour your hair—whether you’re lightening, darkening, or refreshing your hair colour—you open the cuticle and enter the cortex of the hair, where the colour is applied,” Warren explains. “Once the colour is applied, you close and seal the cuticle. Over time, from normal wear and tear, the cuticle can become damaged and stops closing.” The result? The cortex of your hair is left exposed, which causes your hair to lose moisture and get that straw-like feel. Warren recommends working with a colorist who uses a bond builder during the colour process—he swears by B3 Brazilian Bond Builder. “The product works its magic during the colouring process, and is mixed right into the colour formula,” he explains. “I won’t colour without it!”
Speaking of chlorine, make sure you protect your strands if you’re planning on clocking in some serious pool or beach time this summer. An insider hack: wet your hair with non-chlorinated water before taking a dip, Warren says. Doing so will supposedly seal your cuticle and prevent it from absorbing the chlorine or salt water.
