Teen Wolf's Holland Roden Test Drives Spring's Coolest Colours
When Holland Roden, star of MTV’s Teen Wolf, arrived to the set of our latest beauty shoot, she was every bit the down-to-earth, upbeat Texas girl we imagined. In fact, the Los Angeles transplant made playing with two of spring’s biggest beauty trends—bright colours and matching lipstick and nails—even more cheery with her humour. “I love this concept,” she told us. “I’ve never paid a lot of attention to my nails because I have these little boy fingers. I always joke I could be a hand model in a Tonka Truck commercial!” It didn’t take long to convince the actress to try bright colours from now on, thanks to nail artist Michelle Saunders.
The makeup inspiration? “Bare skin, a beautiful fluffy lash, and lips, lips, lips,” makeup artist Georgie Eisdell says. Roden’s flawless skin made the first part easy, so Eisdell lightly applied Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free Foundation ($45), dabbed Marc Jacobs’ Remedy Concealer Pen ($39) under the actress’ eyes for brightness, and set it all with loose powder. She dusted Bobbi Brown’s Eye Shadow ($22) in Bone on the actress’ lids, Frappe in the crease for contour, and applied YSL’s Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara ($30) in Black for a full lash. Dior’s Blush ($42) in Passion Fruit came last, for a radiant flush to complement pretty much any lip colour in Eisdell’s kit.
Meanwhile, hairstylist Nikki Providence gave Roden’s locks movement by curling her strands in small sections, combing through the curls (once they cooled) with a Mason Pearson Brush, and applying a heavy dose of Serge Normant’s Dry Texture Spray ($25). “The inspiration is a little Bardot,” Providence says. “It’s stronger than a natural wave—and a little sexy!”
Saunders started the day with two bright nail colours “sandwiched” together: Essie’s Nail Polish ($9) in Cute as a Button and Madison Ave Hue. “Keep the colours similar, which won’t show any small mistakes,” she says. “Paint your entire nail with two coats of one of the colours, then remove half of the colour with a lip brush soaked in remover.” Once that dries, she suggests gently filling the negative space in with the second colour, et voilà. “Or you can use tape if you want, just make sure the first colour is completely dry before you remove the tape.”
To tie it all together, Eisdell matched the salmon pink hue of the former polish with Bobbi Brown’s Lipstick ($25) in Coral Pink.
DKNY Illusion Dress with V-Back ($295) in Pale Yellow; American Apparel Angeleno Denim Jacket ($95) in Dark Wash Indigo.
Changing your nail polish a few times a week to match your lips requires a gentle routine. “Coat your cuticles and the area under your nails with oil before using polish remover,” Saunders told us. Although the classic red combination above—CoverGirl’s Nail Polish ($3) in Ever Reddy and Nars’ Velvet Matte Lip Colour ($25) in Mysterious Red—won’t ever get old.
Helmut Lang Chintzed Silk Organza Dress ($520;323-951-0994)in Fuchsia; Levi’s Silver Foil Print Anorak ($120).
To accomplish a bright, highly-pigmented orange lip—one of spring’s biggest trends—Eisdell applied Chanel’s Precision Lip Definer ($29) in Orange Intense—and skipped lipstick all together. Meanwhile, Saunders used CoverGirl’s Nail Polish ($3) in Ever Reddy and Essie’s Nail Polish ($9) in Fear or Desire on different hands. “This is my favourite,” Roden says. “It’s so much fun!”
Elizabeth and James Sanders Sweatshirt ($224) in Perforated; Rue Gembon Daya Necklace ($45) in Silver.
Roden’s no stranger to a bold pout—she calls Nars’ Heat Wave ($26) and Bobbi Brown’s Old Hollywood ($24) favourites—but pale lips are uncharted territory for the actress. Eisdell applied Hourglass’ Femme Nude Stylo ($30) in No. 1 to the actress’ lips, while Saunders painted her fingers a complementary shade of lilac: Essie’s Nail Polish ($9) in Play Date. “I’m not used to a light lip, but I absolutely love it.” Roden told us. “It almost took away my lips in a strange way. I want to try this on the red carpet.”
Just Cavalli Bandeau Top.
“With a strong lip and nail, it’s nice to have a shape to the hair,” Providence says. To achieve a fuller look, she applied another blast of Serge Normant’s Dry Texture Spray ($25) to Roden’s locks and wove her strands into a messy side braid. The actress’ strong lip came courtesy of Nars’ Pure Matte Lipstick ($26) in Valparaiso, paired with Essie’s Nail Polish ($9) in Truth or Flair.
Marc by Marc Jacobs Washed Satin Jacket ($548) in Deep Red Multi; Nanette Lepore Striped Flirty Skort ($248) in Blush.
