These Will Be the Biggest Haircuts of the Year, According to a Hollywood Stylist
The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place last Monday, and frankly, there's nothing like an award show red carpet to get us thinking about our hair. (We're like kids in a candy shop who can't decide on the perfect flavour of ice cream.) Except in our case, the dilemma is centered around colour and cut, and more specifically, which look we want to sample ourselves. Plus, it's 2018, a brand-new year overflowing with possibilities—especially where our strands are concerned. After all, we might not be making resolutions in the traditional sense of the word this year, but that doesn't necessarily mean our hair has to go down the drain, does it?
We're game for gorgeous new cuts and styles any day of the 365, but ever since the clock struck midnight on January 1, we've been wanting to know: Which haircuts for 2018 will be the most popular and which looks are Hollywood's most elite stylists predicting will be most covetable? To settle the matter, we reached out to celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan (who counts such women as Kerry Washington, Shay Mitchell, and the Kardashians as clients). Ahead are six must-have haircuts for 2018 Marjan says will be coming in hot for the New Year. Keep reading!
If you've been debating a drastic cut (or simply want to take your lob a tad shorter) 2018 may just be your year to shine, According to Marjan, we'll be seeing lots of chin-grazing bobs like Culpo's on the red carpet and out on the town.
To keep it fresh for the New Year, try opting for a touch of texture and bend (Marjan recommends using a flatiron like Ghd's Platinum Professional Styler $275 to enhance strands with gorgeous waves) and take your part a tad off-centre.
Also, before taking off a significant number of inches, she recommends you do some research on your stylist to make sure you find a professional who can give you the cut you're looking for.
"Make sure you go to someone who you trust to cut your hair and whose work you admire. The best way to find someone like this is to ask someone whose haircut you like who their stylist is. Then research their Instagram, take a look at their work online, and go in for a consultation to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page."
If your face is round, Marjan tells us that a blunt cut that hits around the jawline may be unflattering, whereas one that hits around the collarbones—as depicted above—can be super beautiful and will be a major trend for 2018. (After all, Kim Kardashian West has been wearing a similar look.)
"For super-blunt cuts like Dove Cameron's, accentuate the ends by running a flat iron just over the ends for a polished and refined finish," Marjan explains. For an added dose of shine, she recommends Tresemmé's Keratin Smooth Keratin Smooth Shine Serum ($5).
According to Marjan, pairing long, eyelash-grazing fringe with a sleek bob will be one of the biggest trends for 2018. And what's more is that it's completely adaptable depending on your style, features, and face shape.
"For every kind of haircut, there will always be different variations depending on your hair type and face shape. If you are opting for fringe, I suggest blow-drying it forward right out of the shower to avoid any cowlicks in the front." (Ed. note: As someone who just got bangs myself, I can't emphasise how important this step is.)
"To finish, I recommend using the Ghd Air Professional Performance Hairdryer ($160) and a round brush to direct the hair toward the face, and then finish with the cool setting on the dryer," says Marjan.
The ideal accent to virtually any haircut (especially a blunt lob like Margot Robbie's) a side-swept part instantly elevates any look. Marjan recommends emulating the likes of Robbie and models like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (who have both mastered the look) to create your own variation and take on the haircut for the new year.
For perfect expanded curls, think Yara Shahiri and Solange Knowles, Marjan tells us. "This is one style and haircut we'll be seeing a lot of in 2018."
"To enhance your cut and curls, use a diffuser attachment, and then apply a nourishing hair oil and Oribe Curl Control Silkening Creme ($54) throughout before drying."
According to Marjan, model Stella Maxwell is the ultimate inspiration when it comes to her last prediction for 2018 haircuts: '70s-inspired layers.
"If you love your lips, play up their beautiful shape with layers that hit right around your mouth," advises Marjan. "Then when you go in to style the cut, avoid touching the hair with your hands until it is 100% dry to prevent frizz. Play with '70s-style face-framing layers by scrunching in sea salt spray throughout for an easy, effortless finish."
