EmRata’s 2017 Take on Smoky Eyes Is Seriously Stunning
In great news for anyone who's ever wished they could be a mermaid, Emily Ratajkowski has served up the best grown-up twist on the mermaid makeup trend we've seen this year. We're still not over her red carpet beauty look from the 2017 Vanity Fair Oscars Party; as created by celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo, it was a shimmering, minty dream. This is a super sultry look—hello, New Year's Eve—so far removed from the '80s beauty one might associate with icy blue tones. If you feel like dialling up the sex appeal for party season (or, you know, a random Tuesday afternoon), here's how to do it à la EmRata.
As all the focus is being drawn to your eyes, perfect the skin underneath with a high coverage concealer, like Marc Jacobs Beauty Remedy Concealer Pen ($52). Next, take a gel liner in your chosen colour—if you love the rich green used on Ratajkowski, it's Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Overt ($36)—and line both top and bottom lash line. Because the gel liner is easier to move around, you'll be able to smudge the colour of the top lash line up into the eyelid. Use a small, fluffy brush to diffuse the colour even more.
You can now start to layer eyeshadows on top; one in a darker shade of your colour, and the other in charcoal. Blend it out so that there is more charcoal at the outer edges, and more intense colour at the centre of the lid and corners of the eye. For a little extra pop, you can dab a shimmery silver shadow right at the centre of the eyelid, too.

So much of the impact of the coloured smoky eye comes from thick, fluttery lashes. Go for volume and length with your mascara—and if you can wrangle individual false lashes, adding some from midway to the outer corners will take the whole look up a notch. While Ratajkowski has the benefit of model bone structure, a strong, well-blended contour gives the smoky mermaid eye a more editorial (as opposed to costume) feel.
