5 New Year's Resolutions That Won't Set You Up to Fail

Hallie Gould

I can't even count the amount of time and energy I've spent throughout my lifetime on failed resolutions. It's exhausting. After year after year of crash dieting spirals and hoping to find The One come January 1, I'm taking a stand—I won't do it anymore. Instead, I've decided to feel good about my successes, instead of dwelling on my failures. I have a great career, a wonderful family, and the best friends. I'm sure you do too. Let's celebrate, shall we?

In honour of my new feel-good attitude, I decided to make up a list of five resolutions that will help you live a happier life and feel empowered in 2017. Believe me, they're foolproof. You will not fail. It's all about being you, taking steps towards happiness, and adding a little wellness in there too. Keep reading for New Year's resolutions that won't leave you feeling defeated.

Resolve to take steps toward a goal. Take sweeping statements like, "I won't eat any gluten in 2017" out of your vocabulary. You don't have to change your personality to succeed with your New Year's resolution. Don't bargain with yourself to lose 30 pounds. Instead, plan a date with a friend at a fun workout class or try waking up earlier each day. You'll burn extra calories and be more productive at the same time. Without setting out to do the impossible, you can't fail. You'll just start to feel good about the choices you're making.

Resolve to stay true to who you are. Forget the usual body- or lifestyle-shaming that comes along with the New Year. You don't need to feel bad about yourself just because you're turning a page in your calendar. The most difficult resolutions are the ones that deny yourself of the things that make you unique. Love food and hate working out? Do you. Because rather than spend two hellish weeks on whatever regime you've read about this month, begin making very, very small adjustments. Hey, it worked for me.

Resolve to think about health and wellness over weight-loss and bikini bodies. Nothing good comes from starving yourself or worrying about what you look like in a bathing suit. Repeat after me: There is no such thing as a bikini body. Instead, make healthy choices with your wellbeing and happiness in mind. Try these fun tips to get happy (and stay that way).

Resolve to do something that feels good every single day. Whether that's meditating (it's more powerful than pain medication), working out (here's how to trick your brain into thinking you love it), going for a walk, letting your hair air-dry (here's an official guide to getting it right), putting on a face mask (read about how Korean girls do it), or even fixing yourself a healthy smoothie (this is Kourtney Kardashian's favourite). You know you feel better when you take care of yourself. Sometimes we just need a new excuse to do it.

Resolve to take better care of your current relationships instead of wishing for love. Every year, January rolls around and we add "falling in love" to our ever-expanding wish list. But why not invest in the relationships you already hold so dear? Call your friends, show them you care, catch up after a long absence. They say you find an S.O. when you stop looking, after all.
