PSA: Your Dry Shampoo Habit is Causing Thin Hair

Lisa Patulny

We’ve professed our love for dry shampoo over and over, but according to Allure there’s something kinda important we’ve been missing—our favourite styler could be one culprit behind thinning hair. (*insert sound of screeching brakes here*)

Neil Sadick, dermatologist and director of the Sadick Research Group for understanding and treating hair loss, says this is because build-up of styling products—including our beloved dry shampoo—can stand in the way of a healthy scalp: "Keeping the hair follicles clean prevents occlusion and inflammation that leads to thinning hair later in life.” In a nutshell, your hair needs regular deep cleansing to stay healthy, just like the rest of your skin.

Enter: anti-dandruff shampoos. Surprised? These frumpy hair products aren't just good for minimising flakes, their active ingredients (generally zinc pyrithione and/or salicylic acid) also work as an exfoliant for your scalp. Switch up your regular shampoo for an anti-dandruff formula every other wash to keep build-up at bay—worth it for Gisele-Bundchen-like lengths if you ask us!
