The Absolute Best Haircare Products of 2017, All in One Place
When we first announced the launch of the BYRDIE / CURATED Beauty Awards in July, the response we received from brands was overwhelming. Our goal, always, is to service you, our reader. We know you're discerning, educated, and looking for products and brands that speak directly to you. But to hear that our unique approach to shining a light on stellar new beauty and health buys—breaking each category down from a single winner into personalised categories—had resonated with many in the industry, was both inspiring and energising. Truth be told, we are elated to be leading the charge. I mean, it's 2017 you guys. How is one size fits all still even a thing?
Now, after an intensive trialling process, we're ready to introduce this year's winners. (!!!) Ahead, you'll find we've taken our tailored approach one step further by curating each overarching category (see: skincare, haircare, makeup, fragrance, health) to deliver you top picks on the products you care about most. From the best foundation for oily skin to our favourite all-round pore refiner, the full list of winners was selected by a team of Byrdie Australia editors, influencers from the Who What Wear Australia INF / Network, and one beauty-obsessed reader. And did we mention the whole thing is 100% shoppable? It sure is.

BEST SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
John Frieda Frizz Ease Miraculous Recovery Shampoo & Conditioner ($16)
From the king of frizz-control, Mr John Frieda, comes this sterling reparative drugstore shampoo. Great for managing colour-damaged hair, it helps to temporarily seal split ends, giving strands a healthier look.
Herbal Essences Bio:Renew Smooth Golden Moringa Oil Shampoo ($12)
Infused with what the brand calls "bio:renew" (a mix of antioxidants, aloe, and sea kelp), plus nutrient-rich moringa oil, this stuff is brilliant at replacing lost moisture. Also? It smells like a tropical coconut-spiked dessert.
Christophe Robin Cleansing Volumizing Paste with Pure Rassoul Clay and Rose Extracts ($61)
Like a clay mask for your hair, this unique cleanser removes oil and grime without zapping moisture. Don't be put off by the muddy texture—it transforms into a light foam on contact with water. Whether you air-dry or blowdry, your hair will feel lighter and bouncier post-wash.
BEST HAIR TREATMENT
Kérastase Reflection Masque Chromatique ($60)
If you colour your hair you'll definitely like this. Intended to stretch out time between salon visits, it works by repelling the stuff in tap water that fades your dye job. Our favourite feature, though, is that the formula can be customised with tubes of colourant (called Touche Chromatique), which neutralise undertones.
Pantene Pro-V 3 Minute Miracle Smooth & Sleek Conditioner ($7)
Even if your strands are drier than the Sahara, you'll see a significant difference after adding this treatment to your routine. Designed specifically to address "extreme damage", it's a softening, smoothing, shine-boosting delight.
The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Refreshingly Purifying Cleansing Hair Scrub ($29)
A clever scrub-meets-mask treatment, this stuff is zingy (thanks to Japanese green tea and menthol), purifying, and crazy-refreshing. Massage a fingerful into your scalp to remove sweat, gunk and build-up. Expect clean roots, nourished ends, and shampoo ad-shine all over.
BEST DRY SHAMPOO
Batiste Dry Shampoo Rose Gold ($10)
This cult drugstore dry shampoo is tried and true. Sure, it mops up grime (without leaving behind much in the way of residue), but the benefits don't end there. An antidote to limp hair, it also boosts texture and grit in freshly washed strands. The rose gold scent is great too—like musk sticks, but not as sweet.
R+Co Grid Structural Hold Setting Spray ($39)
A setting spray that sets your style in place without drying out hair or turning it crunchy, it also helps lock out moisture warding off frizz and flyaways. Better yet, because it's so light you'll find your style lasts a heck of a lot longer—anything to get a few more days out of a blowdry, right?
BEST VOLUMISING PRODUCT
David Mallett Volume Powder ($52)
One Byrdie Australia editor calls this texturising dust her "ride or die". Free from allergens, it's gentle on hair and scalp, making it a solid choice for sensitive types. For best results, pump at the roots and ruffle in with your fingers. The result? Subtle lift, invisible hold, and an undone texture that lasts all day.
BEST SMOOTHING PRODUCT
BEST ANTI-DANDRUFF TREATMENT
Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky Shampoo ($12)
Unlike many other dandruff treatments, this medicated shampoo doesn't leave hair feeling stripped and damaged. On the contrary, it's packed with moisturising agents that leave hair clean but silky. You could say, it's head and shoulders above the competition. (See what we did there?)
BEST TEXTURISING PRODUCT
Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray ($50)
"I can’t live, if living is without you." Obsessed with this! It gives great texture and volume without any grit—fantastic for getting a fuller look on fine hair. I've already bought a back up because my life cannot go on without it.
—Nella Van Veenendaal, reader judge
BEST HAIR TOOL
Remington ProLuxe Salon Straightener ($139)
Light and sleek, this straightener's ceramic plate is polished, which enables it to really glide through hair. Our reviewer found it especially good when curling: "There is even heat distribution when doing waves, and there were zero snags". It dials up to full heat in just 10 seconds, too.
BEST NEW INNOVATION
Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam ($43)
Leave it to hair guru Jen Atkin to create a new category of hair product—one that makes hair look and feel clean—with almost zero effort. Application-wise, this dry shampoo foam goes on like a traditional mousse, which feels a bit wet and wrong. Then, the magic happens. It starts to dry, and within minutes the hero ingredient, diatomaceous earth, has absorbed all oil and build-up.
