The Backstage Braiding Trick This Celebrity Hairstylist Swears By
Backstage at We Are Kindred we ran into Lara Worthington's mane man Travis Balcke, who shared with us a simple preparation tip he used while styling models for the show. It's easy, it's product-specific (which means you can do it too), and it's bound to change the way you braid. In fact, we predict this trick could be all that's standing between you and your ultimate good hair day.
Balcke's tip involves prepping hair prior to braiding with Wella Professionals' Sugar Lift Spray ($21), a unique product that delivers "invisible grip". According to Balcke: "You get the result of having something in the hair that gives hold but you can't see it." Having clocked the effects and finish up close, we can tell you: it also leaves hair soft and healthy-looking. So, if you usually rely on sea salt spray to give your hair guts before you plait, you might want to give it a go. You won't be left with crunchy, dehydrated strands the next day, just hair that has body and touchable texture.
To DIY the We Are Kindred style in particular (an epic figure-of-eight braid), stylists created a soft "It girl wave" using VS Sassoon's Diamond Wand, then ric-racked the hair (peep this tutorial for a how-to), leaving the waves loose at the end. The style was chosen to show off neck details in the collection, making it a winner for wearing now with turtlenecks and scarves.
