The First Thing Beauty Bloggers Do in the Morning
Alarm goes off. Snooze. Alarm goes off. Snooze. Alarm goes off. Coffee. Brush teeth and wash face. Skincare, skincare, skincare. Glance at emails. Maybe make breakfast. Five-minute makeup. Go.
A typical morning routine probably sounds a lot like that. However, more and more people are starting to treasure their mornings as a source of sacred "me" time. The first of the enlightened set to realise this? Beauty bloggers, of course. From meditation and affirmation setting to green smoothies and supplement rituals, the 11 bloggers we talked to all have morning routines that put our sunscreen, coffee, and banana habit to shame. Scroll through to find out what your favourite beauty bloggers do first thing in the morning.
Sara Azani of Style MBA: "My morning routine has slightly changed since having my twins. Now, I try to wake up super early (I was never a morning person) to start my day before their next feed. First, I'll make a large cup of coffee, read the paper, and then check emails for about 15 to 20 minutes. Next, comes my morning shower and my five-minute face to get the day started:
"I start with my favourite face wash. Then, I love to use La Mer's Genaissance de La Mer The Serum Essence ($860)—it's basically as if you're applying a layer of gold to your face—followed by Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer ($39). I've gone through two of these bottles and love that it makes you feel so awake!
“Next, I put on primer to add some dewiness to my skin. And of course, the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer ($44) is a must to hide those dark under-eye circles. I follow a healthy dose of that with some Tom Ford's Cream Cheek Color ($105) and highlighter.
“To look more awake and make my eyes really pop, I use tons of mascara. And there you go! This is my go-to routine to look awake and alive after a sleepless night with my twins, and I wouldn't have it any other way!”
Sophie Elkus from Angel Food Style: "My day begins around 7:30 am, and if I'm not traveling or jet lagged and have been good about getting in bed before 11 p.m., I'll wake up naturally without an alarm. The first thing I do is reach for my phone—I wish I were one of those people that left it charging in another room, but sadly I'm not!
"I check texts first, email, then Instagram. I try not to fall into the black hole of lying in bed scrolling through Instagram for more than 10 minutes—it's so easy to waste those precious first couple hours of the day. No matter how much water I drink, I always wake up feeling dry and dehydrated, so I drink a full glass immediately. If I'm home, I'll do warm water, which feels less startling to the system. Drinking coffee or eating right away is not for me; I need a minute to wake up and get hungry. I savor the mornings when I don't have to race out of bed—taking even five minutes to relax makes a big difference in my state of mind and starting the day on a calmer note.
"Once the espresso machine has lured me out of bed, I'll head to the bathroom to brush my teeth and start my morning skincare routine. I start by brushing my teeth before washing my face. Lately, I've been using Sunday Riley and Tata Harper oils and moisturisers. I also and Caudalie. I never ever forget SPF, even if it's dead of winter or pouring rain. Shani Darden, my facialist, has drilled that into me!
"If I work out, it needs to happen before 10 a.m. or else I won't go. My favourite workout is Body By Simone; I'm obsessed with the music, the full-body toning approach, and the fun instructors. For breakfast, I'll make my own simple smoothie with plant-based protein, blueberry, banana, almond butter, almond milk and chia seeds. I also like to make gluten-free (extra-salty!) avocado toast with eggs or even these healthy almond flour pumpkin muffins.
“On days when I don't wash my hair, I’ll load up with dry shampoo—I've been using the Ouai Dry Shampoo ($38) and Oribe's Dry Texturizing Spray ($63). If it's a washing day, I'll let my hair air dry almost completely while I work on the computer, then go back with a blow dryer to smooth it out—I swear by this technique, and it cuts my drying time in half!”

Marianna Hewitt of Life With Me: "First thing in the morning when I wake up, I lie in bed and check Instagram. My management is in NYC, so by the time I wake up, I'm already behind on emails, so I check the urgent ones from my phone in bed as well.
"I take out my Invisalign (my adult version of braces)—I'm almost done—and brush my teeth. Next, I wash my face and apply SPF, which I wear every day.
"Then I head to my kitchen for my morning liquids. I grab my liquid chlorophyll drops and add them to a bottle of water; they have tons of benefits. I also usually have a coffee from my Nespresso machine, which I can't live without, or make a smoothie that has a protein, fat, and fiber to keep me full until lunch. Finally, I take my dog for a walk and then get my day started."
Elizabeth Dehn of Beauty Bets: "I try to keep mornings sacred and grounding, starting with a 10–20 minute meditation. Sometimes I don’t even leave the bed, [I] just sit cross-legged and tune into a Tara Brach podcast. Then it’s a big glass of warm water (an ayurvedic ritual to gently get things moving), followed by either a jog or a long walk with a book on Audible—usually something self-help. Currently I’m loving Autobiography of a Yogi ($6) by Paramahansa Yogananda and Infinite Quest ($10) by John Edward."

Susan Yara of Mixed Makeup: "I’m a big believer in Botox over skincare, and I use most active ingredients like retinol at night.
"That said, the theme of my morning skincare regimen is all about protection. I start with a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away my skin. After that, I apply a vitamin C serum like Murad Advanced Active Radiance Serum ($153), so the antioxidants can fight free radicals and boost the efficacy of the SPF I’ll apply later."

Nikki DeRoest of Hello to Beauty: "I am such a morning person and a morning ritual person! I prefer to head to bed early because I know I am no good after 10 p.m., and I just need to shut down and be productive in the morning. Here's a little sneak peek into my routine.
"First things first, I always give myself at least one to two hours AWAKE before I need to be anywhere. Why? It's the only true quiet time I have to myself all day, and I feel like it sets my day up for success.
"I always set my alarm early and generally try not to snooze. My trick is that I have my coffee made the night before and set on a timer, so it does a great job of luring me out of bed as soon as my alarm starts chiming. So coffee is always my first moment of the day.
"I then like to meander into my living room, where I have cozy pillows and candles, and I can just sit and be. I like to drink my coffee and think about what I have ahead of myself for the day and also any goals I am working on. I also have a set of affirmation and positive mind cards, so I like to pull a card every day to set the tone for the day. It's amazing how spot-on these cards are, and I like to think it's what the universe wants me to hear for the day.
"After I sort out my mind for the day, I usually sit in front of my laptop and return any important emails, check my blog, post on social media, and, of course, make sure I am not missing out on any sales online!
"I am very routine about my breakfast, which was taught to me from my mega-fit and gorgeous Nike Master Trainer best friend. She has me on the three whole eggs and half an avocado brekkie. At first it scared me thinking how much I was eating, but now I live for it. Since I'm such a girl on the go, it keeps my energy up and my stomach full until lunch so, I don't even have to think about food.
"As far as beauty goes in the morning, I am (again) pretty routine. I have down my typical 'daytime' makeup look, which varies slightly depending on my mood, but I can for sure get ready head to toe within 20 to 25 minutes.
"I don't wash my hair every day; [I] just do slight touchups as needed. I do most of my heavy skincare masks and routine at night, so morning can be easy-breezy in the getting ready department. If I could give any advice, it would be to give yourself personal time in the morning. It has changed the way my day goes, and I know am so excited to wake up and face the day every morning!"

Melissa Alatorre: "I consider myself to be a morning person, so I usually try to be up between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m.—crazy right? This is mainly due to the fact that I try to get to the gym before the morning rush gets there.
"My alarm will go off several times before I actually get up, and once my eyes finally do open, the first thing I do is drink an entire glass of water and check on my social media pages to see what happened while I was sleeping.
"After that I'll head on over to the bathroom to splash my face with some ice-cold water, brush my teeth, and do a little skincare action. I use a depuffing eye cream to sooth my eyes. Right now, I am loving the Kate Somerville Goat Milk De-Puffing Eye Balm ($55); it works wonders on my puffy eyes. Then I’ll slather my face in rosehip oil to rejuvenate and hydrate my skin. Currently I am using one from Trilogy, but I have gone through SO many bottles of different rosehip oils (my holy grail skincare item); it’s insane!
"Finally I’ll have my cup of coffee, get my boyfriend Kyle to wake up (or he will sleep forever), and we’ll walk our dog Meeka (a 3-year-old Siberian husky) around our neighborhood before heading off to the gym. Then my day really begins."
