The First Thing Beauty Bloggers Do in the Morning
Alarm goes off. Snooze. Alarm goes off. Snooze. Alarm goes off. Coffee. Brush teeth and wash face. Skincare, skincare, skincare. Glance at emails. Maybe make breakfast. Five-minute makeup. Go.
A typical morning routine probably sounds a lot like that. However, more and more people are starting to treasure their mornings as a source of sacred “me time.” The first of the enlightened set to realise this? Beauty bloggers, of course. From meditation and affirmation setting to green smoothies and supplement rituals, the nine bloggers we talked to all have morning routines that put our sunscreen, coffee, and banana habit to shame. Scroll through to find out what your favourite beauty bloggers do first thing in the morning!

Keiko Lynn: "A shower is like my morning cup of coffee (although I almost always have that, too), so it’s the first thing I do upon waking. Actually, first I take out my Invisalign retainer (so sexy) and brush my teeth, but I kind of feel like the latter is a given in morning routines, right?
"I then wash my face with Avène Gentle Cleanser ($26), warm water, and a muslin cloth. Then I use an exfoliating acid, usually Pixi Glow Tonic ($45) or First Aid Beauty Radiance Pads ($32), followed by Tata Harper Eye Creme ($128). Next, I apply either Darphin Orange Blossom Oil or a serum (currently loving First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum, $70), then moisturiser (Avene Recovery Cream, $33 or Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer, $59).
"I know most people advise applying oil after moisturiser, but my skin responds best to oil before, and if I’m planning on wearing any makeup, I like it a little better with moisturiser on top. Last step: La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 ($28), my SPF of choice. It sounds like a lot, but it’s second nature.
"Since journeying into the world of microblading brows, my daily makeup routine has been pared down to a little concealer around the eyes and nose, some blush and highlighter, and a lip colour of choice—plus eyeliner, if I don’t have lash extensions (annnnd now I sound like the most high-maintenance girl ever). I love a full-glam look, but [I] almost always go for less."

Deepica Mutyala of Deepicam: "Before getting out of bed, I check—in this order—my social media, emails, and text messages. I know… so millennial of me, but I love taking the morning to respond to my followers on social media across all my channels. It's also a great reminder of why I love what I do, and [it] helps get me motivated to start my day. Everyone who supports me is literally the reason I get up every morning.
"Next, I drink a tall glass of water. This is new for me, but I'm trying to be better about water. My mum has amazing skin, and she swears that it's because of her water intake. Skincare, in general, I'm trying to get better about, because as I get older, I realise that my makeup looks only as good as my skincare.
"Then I usually brush my teeth, make some green tea, and eat Greek yoghurt with fruit (usually blueberries and bananas), chia seeds, and honey. It's a healthy breakfast that also satisfies my sweet tooth.
"I'd like to say I work out in the morning, but I'm a night owl. I typically go to sleep around 2 a.m. (sometimes 3 a.m., if I'm in editing mode), wake up at 8:30 a.m., and snooze until 9 a.m. I save my workouts for the evenings when I have the most energy, though I sometimes do an afternoon workout class. I like to think it's part of the perks of working for yourself! I like Barry's Bootcamp because it's efficient—in an hour I get cardio and weights in. Makes me do things I would NEVER do myself. Otherwise, I go to Equinox and do 30/60/90, which I feel like never gets easy but again it pushes me.
"I run a 5K four times a week. It balances out my red wine habits! I feel like my fitness is an ongoing part of my life that I'm working on improving daily. Crazy to hear people who follow me asking for fitness advice because it's something I myself am learning daily. I'm a size six and will never be a zero, but I'm so okay with that. Now my fitness is more of a stress release for me than anything. I feel the best after a run and that impacts my mood for the rest of the day."

Marianna Hewitt of Life With Me: "First thing in the morning when I wake up, I lie in bed and check Instagram. My management is in NYC, so by the time I wake up, I'm already behind on emails, so I check the urgent ones from my phone in bed as well.
"I take out my Invisalign (my adult version of braces)—I'm almost done—and brush my teeth. Next, I wash my face and apply SPF, which I wear every day.
"Then I head to my kitchen for my morning liquids. I grab my liquid chlorophyll drops and add them to a bottle of water; they have tonnes of benefits. I also usually have a coffee from my Nespresso machine, which I can't live without, or make a Be Well smoothie that has a protein, fat, and fibre to keep me full until lunch. Finally, I take my dog for a walk and then get my day started."
Annie Atkinson of She’s in the Glow: "I wake up tired as hell. I brush my teeth (duh) using one of those vibrating Oral B toothbrushes and my Marvis Ginger Mint Toothpaste ($13) that I share with my fiancé. It not only tastes good, but it looks pretty nice, too.
"Next, I head to my kitchen with my vitamins in tow. I take a bunch, but my three favourites are biotin, Viviscal ($70), and the Clean Program Probiotic, which I like because it’s vegan.
"I drink a tonne of liquids first thing in the morning, which I hate, but I just make myself do it. First, I’ll pour in 15 drops of Trace Minerals ConcenTrace Trace Mineral Drops ($29) into a glass of water. This basically balances my pH. I drink that, and then I pour a heavy splash of the Beauty Chef Collagen Inner Beauty Boost ($40) into another glass of water. This stuff is my jam. Plump skin? Yes please.
"Lastly, and depending on how I feel and time, I’ll have another huge glass of water with an Emergen-C, or if I happen to have lemon juice on hand (I will only do this if I have time to squeeze the night before), I’ll have lemon water.
"Then I grab three Stevias and walk downstairs to Stumptown, where I pick up my large almond latte. If I am feeling like I need a break from sugar (most coffee places use sweetened almond milk, because otherwise it doesn’t foam), I’ll ask for a large black coffee and pour my own unsweetened almond milk at home. My new almond milk obsession is Califia. It’s really the best! Only 35 calories per cup.
"Alternatively, if I'm in the mood, I'll make a matcha latte. I have been really into T2tea. Their new Choc Matcha ($30) is to die for, and I have one of their matcha bowls and a bamboo whisk, which makes the whole experience feel very professional!
"Next up is my nutzo skincare routine—you can get the whole scoop on my morning skin routine here.
"Exhausted yet? By this time, I am starving, so I typically make a smoothie with my good ole Vitamix. I make a smoothie every single day for breakfast, and it usually involves the same formula. I’ll make it fancier if I have more time by adding different things like kale, dates, or goji berries. Or I love my Glow Green Mermaid Smoothie Bowl. There you have it. Only once this is done, I’m finally ready to take on my day!"

Amber Katz of Rouge 18: "The first hour of my morning goes like this: I typically wake up between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., unless I have a meeting or breakfast scheduled. I try not to get caught up in social media before I've had a gigantic glass of lemon water, followed by coffee (Grady's Cold Brew with coconut milk is my favourite). Then I brush my teeth and start with my morning skincare regimen.
"It includes Sea Radiance Gentle Cleanser ($45), a swipe of Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant ($36), Lancôme Flash Bronzer Self Tanning Leg Gel ($75)—yes, on my face—and Eve Lom Radiance Perfected Tinted Moisturizer ($87).
"I check email while I'm drinking coffee, catch up on Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. And then I get dressed and go for a run along the East River using the C25K app. But for me, it's always week six, day two—a five-minute walking warmup, a 10-minute run, a three-minute walk, another 10-minute run, and a five-minute walking cool-down."
Elizabeth Dehn of Beauty Bets: "I try to keep mornings sacred and grounding, starting with a 10–20 minute meditation. Sometimes I don’t even leave the bed, [I] just sit cross-legged and tune into a Tara Brach podcast. Then it’s a big glass of warm water (an ayurvedic ritual to gently get things moving), followed by either a jog or a long walk with a book on Audible—usually something self-help. Currently I’m loving Autobiography of a Yogi ($8) by Paramahansa Yogananda and Infinite Quest ($13) by John Edward."

Susan Yara of Mixed Makeup: "I’m a big believer in Botox over skincare, and I use most active ingredients like retinol at night.
"That said, the theme of my morning skincare regimen is all about protection. I start with a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away my skin like Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cleanser. After that, I apply a vitamin C serum like Murad Advanced Active Radiance Serum, so the antioxidants can fight free radicals and boost the efficacy of the SPF I’ll apply later.
"Eye cream is much more important in the morning than at night, so I use Fresh Rose Hydrating Eye Gel Cream because it’s light and absorbs quickly (and won’t cause my makeup to run by the end of the day). I then finish with a moisturizing sunscreen like Elta MD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 ($59), which just happens to help even out skin tone because it has 5% niacinamide in it."

Nikki DeRoest of Hello to Beauty: "I am such a morning person and a morning ritual person! I prefer to head to bed early because I know I am no good after 10 p.m., and I just need to shut down and be productive in the morning. Here's a little sneak peek into my routine!
"First things first, I always give myself at least one to two hours AWAKE before I need to be anywhere. Why? It's the only true quiet time I have to myself all day, and I feel like it sets my day up for success.
"I always set my alarm early and generally try not to snooze. My trick is that I have my coffee made the night before and set on a timer, so it does a great job of luring me out of bed as soon as my alarm starts chiming. So coffee is always my first moment of the day.
"I then like to meander into my living room, where I have cozy pillows and candles, and I can just sit and be. I like to drink my coffee and think about what I have ahead of myself for the day and also any goals I am working on. I also have a set of affirmation and positive mind cards, so I like to pull a card every day to set the tone for the day. It's amazing how spot-on these cards are, and I like to think it's what the universe wants me to hear for the day.
"After I sort out my mind for the day, I usually sit in front of my laptop and return any important emails, check my blog, post on social media, and, of course, make sure I am not missing out on any sales online!
"I am very routine about my breakfast, which was taught to me from my mega-fit and gorgeous Nike Master Trainer best friend. She has me on the three whole eggs and half an avocado brekkie. At first it scared me thinking how much I was eating, but now I live for it. Since I'm such a girl on the go, it keeps my energy up and my stomach full until lunch so, I don't even have to think about food.
"As far as beauty goes in the morning, I am (again) pretty routine. I have down my typical 'daytime' makeup look, which varies slightly depending on my mood, but I can for sure get ready head to toe within 20 to 25 minutes.
"I don't wash my hair every day; [I] just do slight touchups as needed. I do most of my heavy skincare masks and routine at night, so morning can be easy-breezy in the getting ready department. If I could give any advice, it would be to give yourself personal time in the morning. It has changed the way my day goes, and I know am so excited to wake up and face the day every morning!"

Melissa Alatorre: "I consider myself to be a morning person, so I usually try to be up between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m.—crazy right? This is mainly due to the fact that I try to get to the gym before the morning rush gets there.
"My alarm will go off several times before I actually get up, and once my eyes finally do open, the first thing I do is drink an entire glass of water and check on my social media pages to see what happened while I was sleeping.
"After that I'll head on over to the bathroom to splash my face with some ice-cold water, brush my teeth, and do a little skincare action. I use a depuffing eye cream to soothe my eyes. Right now, I am loving the Kate Somerville Goat Milk De-Puffing Eye Balm; it works wonders on my puffy eyes! Then I’ll slather my face in rosehip oil to rejuvenate and hydrate my skin. Currently I am using one from Trilogy ($20) that I picked up at Whole Foods, but I have gone through SO many bottles of different rosehip oils (my holy grail skincare item); it’s insane!
"Finally I’ll have my cup of coffee, get my boyfriend Kyle to wake up (or he will sleep forever), and we’ll walk our dog Meeka (a 3-year-old Siberian husky) around our neighbourhood before heading off to the gym! Then my day really begins."
