The Secret to Ariana Grande's Cat Eye Is Surprisingly So Simple
The dopest thing about Ariana Grande is that she's made such a big name for herself in both the music and beauty industries. Yes, girlfriend's got vocals for days, as we were all awaiting the long-anticipated release of her fourth studio album, Sweetener, which dropped today. But she's also carved out her space in beauty with her signature look: a snatched ponytail and a killer cat eye. She does switch it up from time to time, like her beautiful bare-faced British Vogue cover with freckles and blonde loose waves. But for the most part, she stays true to herself, and we love when a pop star keeps it real.
There are loads and loads of Grande-inspired tutorials on YouTube and Instagram. Everyone and their mama is trying to get Grande's precise winged liner, including us. Thankfully, in a recent interview with Refinery29, Grande's makeup artist, Ashley K Holm, let everyone in on exactly how she does it. Holm told the site that multiple factors play into Grande's signature look: "Everything from bronzed chiseled cheeks, sun-kissed highlighted skin, matte lips, winged liner, and wispy lashes," she told Refinery29, adding that they're "working on ways to play off of her staple look using different products, colours, and techniques."
Okay, now on to the good part. How the hell does Holm get Grande's liner to look perfect every single time? For one, she uses good products. "Eyeliner and eyes in general are a main focus for our looks," Holm told Refinery29. "I'm constantly switching up the brands and products I use, but right now I'm loving Nudestix Rock N' Roller Eyeliner Ink."
And how exactly does she apply the above? "Make sure the wing is angled upward towards the tail end of your eyebrows to lift the eyes up," she said. It's as simple as that, folks. IMO, winged liner is one of those things that fit into the practice-makes-perfect category. If it comes out a little bumpy at first, no worries. Just try again. And you know Byrdie's got you covered with more makeup artists' specific techniques on how to perfect your winged liner.
