Is This the New Eyeshadow Trend We Need to Try, Selena Gomez?
Selena Gomez has owned 2017; from being crowned Queen of Instagram (with 124 million followers she is the biggest account on the platform), to finally releasing new music for the first time since 2015, working as Executive Producer on the Netflix mega-hit 13 Reasons Why. And then, of course, the rekindled romance with one Justin Beiber to remind us all that true love is real (we're rooting for you, Jelena!) There is no question that the singer is going through a stunning phase of reinvention, and her ever-changing beauty transformations have us hooked: '80s redux in the "Bad Liar" film clip, or feline '50s glamour for a Vogue cover. But the coolest, most high-impact look so far? This exciting, fashion-forward colour play at the 2017 Met Gala.
Those big, bright wings of deep pink are so brash they're nearly punk—such a cool move for a true pop princess. And while the trend might look intense, it's actually easy to achieve if you're game to try. First things first, an eyeshadow primer is essential for this look. It will hold your eyeshadow in place and give it real staying power, which is important when working with highly pigmented products (nothing is less chic than pink eyeshadow sliding down your cheek).
Next, pick a brighter shade and lighter shade of your chosen colour—we love the variety of tones in the Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette ($66). Draw a dramatic wing shape in the lighter shade and fill in completely, going almost all the way to the brow. Then switch to the brighter shade and really build the colour up, going over the shape from the outer tip to the inner edge of your iris. Be sure to blend everything well, smoothing out any hard lines.
For the final touch, go in with the light shade around the inner corners of the eye. Add a thin line of black liquid liner—like this Marc Jacobs Beauty Magic Marc'er ($44)—as close to the upper lashes as possible for extra depth, and be generous with your mascara.
Gomez also wore an orange iteration of the trend—to match her Oscar de la Renta party dress—to the 13 Reasons Why premiere in March. If you want to take this beauty power move to the next level, have some fun with an unexpected colour combination.
