Why Clinique's Cult-Status Lipstick Should Be in Every Makeup Bag

by Lexy Lebsack

In 1971, Clinique launched Black Honey: a sheer, deep burgundy lip colour with a universally flattering, cool undertone. It immediately became one of the best-selling prestige lip colours and is still the top performing shade for the brand in North America. In fact, Clinique sold one tube every three minutes in the 2013 fiscal year. So what’s so special about it?

The genius of Clinique’s Almost Lipstick ($15) is in the formula: it’s sheer, hydrating colour that’s somewhere between a lipstick and a gloss—and only comes in one shade: Black Honey! A single application on bare lips gives a wash of colour, while a few coats delivers a deeper effect. For a bold lip, just apply lip liner (we like Laura Mercier’s Lip Pencil ($22) in Deep Wine and NYX’s Slim Lip Pencil ($4) in Plum) over your entire pout, then slick on a thick coat of Black Honey. The burgundy hue flatters every skin tone, making the lipstick a true staple.

If you happen to be into matching your lip and nail colour—like we are!—pick up the hue in polish form, too!
