Exclusive: Tracy Anderson on How to Get Fit in 2015
What do Gwyneth Paltrow’s legs, J.Lo’s booty, and Nicole Richie’s arms all have in common? They’re all the result of one person: Tracy Anderson. To call her a trainer would be an understatement; a fitness-and-healthy-lifestyle guru is more accurate. We got the chance to speak with Anderson and learn all about her groundbreaking new event with Westfield Century City and Westfield Topanga (hint: “shop ‘til you drop” might take on a new meaning), as well as get her best fitness tips for the New Year. Can you tell us a bit about this crazy cool event you’re doing with Westfield?
Anderson: One of the things I have had such a huge demand for is people wanting in on my master classes. People will write in about how expensive and exclusive they are, so our CEO, Maria Baum, who is a genius, said, “If you’re going to go digital and you want to do it the way that you want to, just invite everyone into your master classes!” That was where this idea was born.
So through this event, people can see what it’s like to workout in one of your coveted classes, free of charge?
Anderson: Yes. I don’t need to be in hair and makeup, I don’t need to rehearse—we hook up a camera and invite people into those classes. Then, one of my trainers, who will be on-site to guide the workout, will break down that moves. What I love the most about the opportunity is the chance we have to bring together a big community of people all over the world. Westfield has the best shopping experiences around, so what better way than to celebrate the multitasking world we live in than coming by, having a workout, connecting with people, and shopping?

If there’s one thing Byrdie readers should do to improve their health in 2015, what would it be?
Anderson: Simple: exercise. We miss out on it more and more and more. Our systems are designed to be fuelled by really great organic whole foods, and our systems are meant to burn—we’re meant to burn and move. So just make sure that you’re getting some sort of exercise in, and eating really good, whole foods.
That might be easier said than done though—any tips on how to motivate yourself to workout when it’s the last thing you feel like doing?
Anderson: It’s all about your mindset. I think that if you really look at yourself in the mirror and you pretend like you have to take care of yourself as a two-year-old or a baby, and think about how you treat yourself, it would be more in line with how you should actually be living your life. It’s so funny, you see parents all the time saying things like, “Only half a cookie.” It’s like, you’re monitoring the kid that you love, you’re making sure that they’re getting exercise and getting enrolled in classes and activities, but then you neglect to take care of yourself.
Interesting way to think about it!
Anderson: It’s true. The reality is that we live in a face-paced, multi-tasking world, and you really have to make it a priority to take care of yourself. There’s not a coffee, a pill, a juice cleanse, or quick fix—it’s the discipline of every single day.

It’s a new year—do you believe in fitness resolutions? What are yours this year?
Anderson: I believe in anything that’s going to help you get started. If it’s a resolution, then I’m all for it. If it’s going to help you improve yourself, go for it! My resolution was to connect with my audience more, to be more accessible to everyone.
Seems like you’re doing just that! Do you have any suggestions for healthy pre- or post-workout snacks? What should people stay away from?
Anderson: Before my workout every morning, I’ll drink two scoops of my wellness which consists of half flax milk and half rice milk. After my workout, I love a toasted piece of rice bread (or two, actually) with vegan, no-soy mayonnaise, avocado, turkey, and a pinch of sea salt. I love a sandwich like that. I would recommend staying away from things with flour or a lot of emulsifiers—it’s tough to lose weight (or even maintain a good weight) when you’re pumping your body with things like that.
Any guilty pleasures?
Anderson: Chocolate. I love chocolate. I don’t like dark chocolate, which is better for you, but there’s this brand called Enjoy Life that’s dairy-free, nut-free, and soy-free. Even if I just have a handful of those, I’m satisfied.
You've created something amazing with your Method workout. What was the best piece of advice you received along the way?
Anderson: Well, I wouldn’t say it was advice—more of a challenge. Somebody said to me many, many years ago, “Yeah, of course the science is there, but no one is ever going to come up with that much content.” That challenge for me was like, “Yes, I can.” And I did. I think that sometimes when you start to create something in life that you’re passionate about and you believe in, you have to hear the words of someone challenging you and criticising you, and digest it differently inside. It can be your greatest motivator. I do not coach that, I do not believe in coaching people with criticism, but I will say that remark was a moment that stuck with me.
Any last words of advice of healthy living motivation to our readers?
Anderson: It’s going to sound cheesy, but it really comes from the conversations of loving yourself—being someone who is like, I really love life and I’m lucky to be alive, so I want to make sure that everything I’m doing is life-giving. Real beauty comes from taking care of yourself and being life-giving. And having that sort of mantra and conversation with yourself is incredibly empowering and important.
