Makeup Artist Must-Haves: Sundance Edition
The Sundance Film Festival is a place where indie films debut and celebs come to frolick, schmooze and promote their movies amidst the snowy slopes of Utah. It also happens to be located in a really, really cold location (see the aforementioned snowy slopes), which means Hollywood's makeup artists have to change up their products and techniques now that they're no longer in sunny SoCal.
To find out how stars like Rashida Jones and Lena Dunham get bright-eyed and glowy-skinned despite the freezing temps, we tapped makeup artist Fabiola, who got these two celebrities ready for Sundance this year. When it comes to cold-weather beauty, moisture is key. “During Sundance, I need to make sure my clients' skin is hydrated,” says Fabiola. “This is especially important in the cold, and at the high altitude.” Her go-to trick? She starts with Tata Harper’s Floral Essence Toner ($65), then follows with Burt’s Bees Renewal Firming Day Lotion ($20). On especially dry skin, she adds Lina Hanson’s Global Serum ($85), applying it after the toner and before moisturizer. “The toner actually allows the serum and lotion to be more easily absorbed in the skin,” she says. “Make sure to really massage the serum in to get the blood flowing to your face.”
To avoid the flakey, cake-y effect, Fabiola seeks out foundations and concealers that are ultra-moisturizing. “I like the tinted moisturizers by Nars, or light, weightless foundations, like Cle de Peau’s Refining Fluid Foundation or Giorgio Armani Designer Shaping Foundation ($67),” she says. “They give medium coverage, and leave your skin looking hydrated and dewy all day.”
For an instant refresh, she recommends spritzing Liz Earle’s Instant Boost Skin Tonic ($25) on a Beauty Blender ($20), then lightly patting it over skin to refresh makeup and give a softly flushed, glowy finish.
The secret to soft, smooth lips even in sub-zero temps? Fabiola swears by a gentle lip scrub, like Fresh’s Sugar Lip Polish ($23). “It’s perfect for getting excess skin off,” she tells us. “I love using Burt’s Bees Lip Balms ($3) and Lip Crayons ($9) to re-moisturize—they have great texture and colour, and are amazing at hydrating lips!”
