Changing Climates? This In-Flight Beauty Routine Will Keep Your Skin From Freaking Out
Getting off a plane looking fresh faced is nearly impossible. But you can’t blame us for trying. Who better to give us the tools to do so than celebrity aesthetician Susan Ciminelli? She’s the woman responsible for the glowing visages of Eva Longoria, Salma Hayek, and Jennifer Lopez.

Step one is pretty standard: Drink water—a lot of it. “Cabin pressure, dry air conditions, and low oxygen levels on a plane can wreck havoc with your skin. You can help ward off dehydrated 'flight face' by drinking plenty of water,” Ciminelli says. And she doesn’t mean tonic water spiked with gin—alcohol dehydrates you. “Have a large bottle of water on hand and sip throughout your flight, and nibble on wet fruit and vegetables to stay hydrated from the inside out.” Bring your own and fill it once you’re through security to save yourself a good $6 at the airport. We love the large Corkcicle Canteen ($50). Staying away from salty foods will also help you avoid deplaning with puffy “flight face.”
“Your metabolism also slows down on a flight (due to lack of movement and sitting for prolonged periods of time), and many suffer from constipation,” Ciminelli says. “When in your seat, perform an abdominal massage on yourself by massaging your tummy in large circular motions, clockwise. This will help get things moving. Releasing waste from your colon will ensure a build up of toxins is not released via the skin, which can cause breakouts and a lackluster complexion.” Ciminelli also takes Blue Green Algae Pills ($90) when she travels to supply her blood with superfoods.
Finally, it’s time to shift focus to the outside. Remove your makeup, and with clean hands apply a generous layer of moisturiser, like the ultra-hydrating Anti-Aging Replenishing Extreme Repair ($212) from Radical Skincare or The Body Shop's Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Cream ($46), to your face, neck, and hands. “Applying pressure on points between your eyebrows, along your eyebrows, on either side of your nose, above your upper lip, and below your lower lip is great for increasing your circulation, which will help pep up dull-looking skin,” Ciminelli says. Apply firm pressure to each point for 10 seconds and you’ll step off the plane with luminous, supple skin.
