Um, French Girls Follow the Same Skincare Routine You Had in High School
There’s no denying that luxurious, take-your-time-with-it skincare is trending. The popularity of Korea’s 10-step (plus!) routines speak to just how much we've embraced DIY skin rituals. That said, there's another nation of women with exceptional complexions we look to for skinspo, and you might be surprised to discover their routines are shockingly simple in comparison.
Top French facialist (and author of French Complexion) Christine Clais told The Huffingon Post Australia that though her countrywomen take skincare seriously, they do so in a time- (and wallet-) friendly way: "There's a common misconception that to attain glowing skin you must invest a lot of time and follow an endless skincare ritual. Untrue! What matters the most is consistency." To that end, Clais suggests a three-step routine not dissimilar to the one you may have followed in high school.

Step 1: Cleanse your face, neck, and décolletage.
Step 2: Apply an eye gel or cream to the eye contour area.
Step 3: Apply moisturiser containing SPF to your face, neck, and chest. For day, SPF is key, as Clais' stresses the importance of protecting skin against UV rays: "I stay out of the sun as much as possible and wear sunscreen to prevent skin damage and ageing."
The absence of harsh scrubs and exfoliants is no accident—Clais believes over-exfoliating the skin can be damaging to the complexion. "Overuse of harsh products can lead to a weakening of the barrier function of your skin, which in turn causes dehydration, skin irritation, and eventual skin damage and premature ageing," she says.
The French approach is one that emphasises hydrating and nourishing, so stick with gentle formulas (that suit your skin type) across your regime.
