Paleo or Vegan: Which Diet Actually Works?
If you’re like me, you dream of the day you’ll muster up enough self-control to overhaul your diet, stick with it long-term, and finally become a Gwyneth Paltrow-esque model of wellness. But with so much conflicting diet information in the discussion, it can feel impossible to know where to begin. Should I go Paleo for weight loss? Vegan? Gluten-free? Which will help me slim down fast vs. get "swole" vs. maintain a healthy lifestyle long term? One expert condemns what another recommends.
A new study from Kettle & Fire's The Great Diet Debate aimed to find the answers to these often-asked questions. Researchers polled over 2,500 regular dieters to summarize their thoughts on four of today’s most practiced diets: gluten-free, Paleo, vegetarian, and vegan.

One question the poll asked was if dieters found their eating plan helped them achieve their personal health and fitness goals. They were allowed to answer “yes,” “not sure,” or “no.” According to the poll, the Paleo diet had the highest percentage of yeses with 61.7%. Gluten-free came in second (61.3%), vegetarian third (60%), and vegan fourth (59.3%). Paleo dieters gave with lowest percentage of “no” responses (21.9%), though interestingly, gluten-free dieters gave the highest percentage of “no” responses (29%). But the study said that “all four types of diet followers expressed that they thought their diet was worth it at a rate of nearly 60%, with Paleo dieters feeling the best about their diet.”
The majority of people who followed a Paleo diet did so to “become healthier,” as opposed to the other reasons, such as cost, moral issues, or weight loss.
The poll also reported on which diets men and women try the most. The results found that both men and women most commonly try (and stick to) a vegetarian diet. The vegan diet is hardest for women to stick to with 14.8% having previously tried it, but only 2.9% currently following it. The lowest percentage of men and women try going gluten-free, but it is the diet with the best retention rate of followers.
Speaking of retention rates, the survey also found that the gluten-free diet keeps the most followers until the one to two-week mark. Paleo dieters are most committed until two or three months in. Vegetarian dieters have the highest longevity, 22.9% of whom successfully maintain the diet for over a year.
