Orly's New Nail Polish Collab Is the Most Empowering Thing We've Seen in a While
In a lot of ways, 2017 has been a hard year for people who belong to otherised groups, especially women of colour. But the beauty community is doing its best to make everyone feel safe, included, and confident. The latest piece of positive news? Today, popular nail polish brand Orly launched an unprecedented new collaboration with Muslim Girl, an online publication and resource for Muslim women. The collab comes in the form of a collection of six nail polish colours called #HalalPaint, specifically formulated with Muslim women in mind. The line features brilliant, cheeky names created by Muslim Girl, including "Haram-Bae," "What the Fatima?" and "Ig-Noor the Haters." The products are created using Orly's "Breathable" formula and are crafted with 100% halal ingredients.
This is important because according to Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, Muslim Girl's editor in chief, some Muslim women steer away from traditional nail polish "because it creates a barrier on their nails against ablution water for prayer." In addition to being healthier for the nails, this formula offers a unique solution for Muslim women, as it allows moisture to pass through the layer of polish.
The #HalalPaint collection is one of the first mainstream efforts to create a special space in beauty for Muslim women. As Al-Khatahtbeh says, “Many of us are the girls who could never find our names on a keychain, so we wanted to make sure we provided that experience through this collection.”
The limited-edition collection is available now on halalpaint.com for $65, but currently only ships within the U.S.
