5 Fresh Ways to Wear Black Eyeliner

Lisa Patulny

Sick of sketching on the same old cat-eye? There’s a lot you can do with black liner beyond Marilyn-style wings. For proof, look no further than the spring runways where makeup directors reimagined classic eyeliner in dozens of ways.

We've curated our five favourite upgrades for you to Pin and save, for the next time liner-boredom strikes. Ready to reignite your love for the humble kohl pencil? Keep scrolling to see the looks!

UPGRADE 1: AT THE OUTER CORNERS

If you find kohl a little too stark, this softly defined look could be the perfect compromise. To DIY, sketch your pencil along both top and bottom lashlines, keeping the colour just on the outer third of your eye. Blend with a fingertip or smudge brush for a hazy, daytime-friendly effect.

UPGRADE 2: EGYPTIAN-INSPIRED

For a statement kinda cat-eye look, get experimental by adding a bottom flick underneath your regular wing. Take care to keep the bottom line shorter (it should only reach two thirds of the way along underneath the top flick), and tidy up any smudges with a cotton tip.

UPGRADE 3: UNDERNEATH THE EYE

One of the quickest ways to refresh your liner is by switching the placement from your lids to under your bottom lashline. This look can draw attention to tired or irritated eyes so pat on a creamy concealer, and consider soothing eye drops to keep the focus on your liner.

UPGRADE 4: ON THE WATERLINE

If you’ve only ever lined your waterline as part of a smoky eye, this minimalist take might feel a little underdone. Paired with clean lids and plush lashes, it highlights your eyes without taking over your makeup. For extra intensity, line your upper lash line too – it’ll make lashes appear thicker.

UPGRADE 5: AS MAKESHIFT EYESHADOW

Kohl pencil is a makeup mainstay for a reason - not only can it create clean definition, it can also be blended into a creamy shadow. Scribble liner just on lids, blend with a fingertip (the heat from your skin will help diffuse the colour), then set with translucent powder for staying power.
