A Google Employee Reveals the Top Beauty Questions You Searched in 2016
Late-night internet surfing takes you on inexplicable journeys. One minute, you're reading a Facebook status from someone you went to high school with, and then before you know it, you're on their cousin's girlfriend's roommate's LinkedIn page. A few more Google searches, 20 pages of Kanye West tweets, and several Keyboard Cat videos later, you think, How did I even end up here? The same happens to us when we escape into a 2 a.m. beauty click hole, investigating things like nonsurgical nose jobs and Kourtney Kardashian's height. And trust us—those aren't anywhere near the strangest beauty-related questions we've asked ole Google.
Interestingly enough, according to recent data, it appears the majority of the population is a bit more refined with their searches: a rep for Google shared with us the top 10 beauty questions of 2016, and they weren't nearly as strange as we expected (or secretly hoped). But they do speak to the fact that many women and men are very to-the-point with their beauty inquiries, simply wanting to elevate their current routines and methods, which is something we can all get behind. Curious what other people are researching (and the answers to their questions)? Find out below!
#10: "What is balayage?"
Naturally, as beauty editors, we're all too familiar with balayage and have even moved past the trend, vying after tigereye colour of late. But it turns out many were newly introduced to the style this year, flocking to the search engine to figure out what the heck this tough-to-pronounce word means.
#9: "How to fill in eyebrows"
We totally understand this one. There are so many different methods and brow products that it can feel a bit overwhelming. The thing is, there's no one answer. It all depends on the type of brows you have, your skin type (oily skin needs a grippier formula), and the style you're looking for. Check out this guide for choosing the perfect brow product and how to apply it.
#8: "How to get rid of bags under your eyes"
Ah, the age-old question. Puffy, tired-looking under-eyes stick out like a sore thumb, and sometimes no amount of concealer can hide them. That's why team Byrdie collectively gasped when news editor Victoria introduced us to dermarolling, a method of gliding tiny needles over your skin to boost collagen production and thicken the treated area. Doing this under your eyes will help conceal dark circles and tighten the skin, making bags disappear.
#7: "How to apply concealer"
Applying concealer isn't as simple as just swiping it on. You've got to have the right kind of product so that it won't crease or cake. The key is having it hide imperfections while being virtually undetectable on your face—which seems like a tall order, but we're here to help. Take a look at our guide to how to apply concealer and which formulas to use as well as these expert tips for creaseless wear.
#6: "How to clean makeup brushes"
Cleaning your makeup brushes is like going to the dentist: You know you need to do it, but you keep putting it off until you absolutely have to. But just like waiting too long for a teeth cleaning could lead to major dental work, grossly unwashed makeup brushes could cause infections. To avoid harboring a bacterial ecosystem on your tools, follow this easy guide for squeaky-clean makeup brushes.
#5: "How to remove gel nails"
Gel nail polish has transformed our manicures in so many ways. Opting for the high-powered lacquer instead of a standard polish means no premature chipping, but this also means it can be a bit of a burden to remove. If you're planning to take off your gel polish at home, this step-by-step breakdown will make the process much less painful.
#4: "How to curl hair"
Gone are the days of Shirley Temple–style barrel curls—now, it's all about loose, beachy waves. So how do you get a wave with the same iron you once used for eighth-grade dance ringlets? It's all in positioning. Try this method for a curl-wave hybrid that lasts all day.
#3: "How to shape eyebrows"
While this question may seem similar to "how to fill in your eyebrows," shaping errs more on the side of sculpting, tweezing, and trimming to prep them for the final stage of filling them in with makeup. Take a look at how Sara Donaldson grooms her (incredible) brows to learn how to do it yourself!
#2: "How to make your hair grow faster"
It's safe to say we've all been victims of a too-short haircut that left us wanting to either A) incorporate a hat into our daily wardrobe, B) book an appointment for extensions, or C) google ways to make said short hair grow faster. By the looks of this data, many women do the latter. We recently shared a few natural ways to speed up the growth process for those who need to quickly reverse a bad haircut or are just vying for Rapunzel-esque locks.
#1: "How to do a fishtail braid"
The top question surprised us since fishtails are probably the most complicated braid, and we don’t typically see that many women wearing them. But perhaps that’s the reason: They’re still figuring it out (hey, we’re in the same boat). Take a look at this fishtail tutorial with image references to get the process down pat for the new year.
