Exclusive: Miranda Otto Reveals the Secrets to Her Ageless Complexion
Acclaimed actress Miranda Otto has long been a national treasure, but she's also a bonafide beauty icon. A world away from the stereotypical Aussie bronzed babe, the fair-skinned redhead symbolises a more sophisticated type of beauty idol. (One, it's fair to say, we're obsessed with.) All milky skin, signature strawberry strands and pale blue eyes—Otto's elegance is practically regal. The star of dozens of films and T.V shows including The Lord of The Rings', and cult favourite, Homeland, Otto's near 30-year career continues to move from strength to strength. This year is another big one, with buzzy series 24: Legacy on the horizon, plus a turn as the new face of the QVB's 2016 campaign.
Otto took time out from her schedule to chat with us about her ambassadorship of the historic building and next-level shopping destination, as well as all things beauty and travel. Currently based in sunny L.A. (and originally from Queensland), we had to know how Otto manages to keep her fair skin looking so flawless in particular. By the looks of her enviable complexion, we figured she either has access to the fabled fountain of youth or a stack of skincare secrets we need access to, like, now. The good news? She does, and she was more than happy to share.

How would you describe your day-to-day skincare routine?
I try to be meticulous with my cleansing regime and wash my face each night with a Clarins face wash. Growing up in Australia we are used to the sun, so I make sure I apply sunscreen and moisturiser before I begin the day.
Do you have any top tips for looking after your skin in and after the sun?
Sunscreen! Cover up as much of your face and body as you can, and find a hat you love. Sun in Australia is brutal, even if you’re not fair skinned. I’ve worked in Africa and America and the sun just doesn’t burn the way it does here. When we are young we don’t think about it enough. Even though there is so much great awareness now, I would still say it is my top tip.
How do you prep your skin for a big event or shoot?
Before an event or the start of filming I book a facial. I find the pro cleanse helps my skin to prepare for the rigours ahead. If embarking on a long shooting schedule I try to get a facial in once a month if possible. Wearing makeup for 12-hours in varied lighting and weather conditions can dry the skin. Other tips are of course, get proper rest where possible and drink lots of water.
Are there any beauty tips you’ve picked up on set?
I am always getting tips from people in the industry, it is hard to remember them all. The one that has stuck with me most is cold rinsing my hair post-conditioner; this helps to close the cuticle and seal in moisture giving you shiny, healthy-looking hair. Another great trick is to heat your eyelash curler with a hairdryer—they stay curled for longer.
Which three beauty products do you never travel without?
The air conditioning on planes completely dries my skin out. Over the years I’ve heard some great tips from flight attendants—they travel all the time, they must know! My top three would be Mac’s Prep + Prime Fix + ($27) to hydrate, Aquaphor ($8) for lips and hands, and my go-to moisturiser from La Mer. They keep me feeling refreshed.
How has your beauty routine changed between living in Australia and the U.S.?
L.A. is the driest place I’ve ever lived! When I get off the plane in Sydney and hit the humidity I instantly feel five years younger. When in L.A. I am more vigilant with my skin and hair regime and use stronger moisturisers and hair treatments to counter the dehydration.
