The Broke Girl's Guide to Perfect Hair Colour
You did your research, read 5000 salon reviews online, and finally went for the plunge—and your shiny, new hair colour looks amazing. Props. The only problem is your bank account has taken the fall, and the situation is, ahem, not as pretty. What’s a broke girl with fabulous hair supposed to do? Not let that multidimensional colour fade prematurely, that’s what.
We spoke with celeb colourist and L’Oréal Paris hair colour expert Kari Hill (she’s responsible for the perfect hair colour of Taylor Schilling, Michelle Williams, and our own sister site’s editor) and beauty DIY expert and Beauty Bean founder Alexis Wolfer and asked for their budget-friendliest hair colour tips. Keep flipping for six hair colour maintenance tips every broke girl should know!
Turn down the heat
Heat is one of the biggest factors when it comes to your hair colour fading—so try to keep your long, hot showers to the minimum (which you should have been doing anyway, if you’ve been showering like a beauty editor). Same goes for your heat styling tools—all of them scorch your hair and open up the cuticle, making it way easier for the dye to come out. If you’re going to be out in the sun, protect your strands with a product that contains UV filters, like Aveda's Sun Care Protective Veil ($50).
Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar ($11)
Sometimes, a quick rinse with ingredients in your kitchen is all it takes to revive your dull strands. Here are a couple of our favourite DIY concoctions, based on your hair colour (because coffee and blonde hair don’t sound like they would yield desirable results).
Not only will eating healthier foods be better for your body, but certain ones can make your hair shinier and brighter too. Picks like eggs, which are full of biotin and protein (something your hair cuticle is actually made of), and salmon and sea buckthorn berry, which are full of healthy fats to keep your hair cuticle strong and shiny, will help you in your quest for bright, vibrant hair. Check out the 11 foods your hair will thank you for eating.
