This Bali-Based Model Told Us Her Secrets to a Frizz-Free Fringe
If you've been to Bali you'll know the humidity there is no joke. If you're prone to frizz, you'll also know that any summer holiday hair fantasies you may have had (perfectly tousled waves, just me?) evaporate into hot air the moment you arrive. Unless, of course, you're Madeline Joy Relph. The Australian model and influencer spends much of her time on the Indonesian island but manages to sport an incredible 'do 24/7. Her hair somehow manages to always look both "done" and effortless. Case in point: Her fringe. It's French girl perfect.
As a beauty editor with access to ALL the experts and their frizz-fighting secrets, I couldn't for the life of me figure out the magic behind Relph's hair so...I asked her for the insider info. (#Selfless.) Below you'll find the Bali-based influencer's clever strategy for banishing fluffiness in humidity, along with a breakdown of her natural beauty routine *and* everything she eats in a day.

On Relph: Zulu & Zephyr Easterly One Piece ($170).
Byrdie Australia: Walk us through your morning skincare routine.
Madeline Relph: At the moment I don’t have much of a routine here in Bali, but for skincare I cleanse my face with Sukin, tone with Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract ($33), and do a little bit of vitamin C moisturiser. And a lot of salt water swims!
B: What’s the one skincare product you can’t live without?
MR: My lanolin ointment. It seems to be the only thing that will fix my constantly dry lips.
B: Your hair is amazing; how do you style it on the daily?
MR: The most styling I do is to straighten my fringe. I spritz in a bit of Kevin Murphy’s Hair.Resort.Spray ($40), scrunch it in, and voilà. I also visit Edwards & Co for a lived-in blonde so my hair looks fresh while I’m traveling. That helps.
B: Any secrets to beating frizz in summery temps we should know about?
MR: I've been told I'm lucky with my frizz, I don't get much of it! My hair’s generally a natural mess, but to keep the mess maintained I sometimes use Kevin Murphy’s Anti.Gravity.Spray ($40).
Pictured: Sunday Supply Co. Sun Ray Beach Umbrella ($239).
B: How do you manage to have such a perfect fringe when you spend so much time in humidity?
MR: My fringe has a hard time in Bali. It has a mind of its own, but I tend to let it run free. I'm in love with R + Co’s Death Valley Dry Shampoo which I use for touch-ups to help control the sweat.
B: Name your 3 favourite hair products.
MR: Kevin.Murphy’s Hydrate-Me Wash ($38) and Rinse ($39); my hair is always dry but these babies help a lot! Kevin.Murphy’s Hair.Resort.Spray ($40); for when I haven't had time for the beach but need that salty hair look. And Olaplex—it consistently saves my blonde hair!
B: What does a day in your diet look like?
MR: I'm a fruit bat, sweet tooth and vegetarian, and the options for me here in Bali are endless. I used to cook a lot at home but it's cheaper here to eat out than it is to cook. I mainly eat a lot of the local warung food, veggies, rice and tempeh.
B: Walk us through your weekly workout schedule.
MR: I don't have a workout schedule. I have a lot of energy and naturally don't sit still. I enjoy any active outdoor activities like swimming and surfing, and take little hikes here and there. I do want to start boxing.
B: What’s the best fitness tip you’ve picked up over the years?
MR: Just to stay active day-to-day.
