9 Things Every L.A. Girl Has in Her Makeup Bag
“Blue jean baby, L.A. lady…” It’s easy to imagine the kind of girl Elton John croons about in “Tiny Dancer.” Lissome, sun-kissed, denim shorts–clad—yup, that’s the quintessential L.A. girl for you, and we wear our worn-in Levi’s all the more proudly because of it.
On the beauty front, we overlap in a few key ways. Some of us might take the beach beauty concept to heart (as in, we’ll let the salty air and sun do their stuff, and that’s about it—SPF notwithstanding, obviously), while others of us are happy to spend hours in front of a mirror (or camera) perfecting our non-touring techniques (shoutout to our vlogger babes)—but all of us share a few ride-or-die products in common. Take a peek in any L.A. girl’s makeup bag and you’ll find at least one (or, like, all) of the products ahead. What can we say? We love makeup. Go on, keep scrolling to see what they are.
Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Highlighter ($64)
L.A. is home to some of the industry’s top beauty influencers and vloggers, so it comes as no surprise that one of them—Jaclyn Hill—would launch a product with makeup brand Becca that instantly reached cult status. This shimmery champagne highlighter is a staple in any L.A. girl’s bag, and instantly gives anyone a post-beach glow.
Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer ($51)
There’s a reason this bronzer has over a thousand positive reviews on Sephora.com—it’s truly the matte bronzer to end all matte bronzers. The universally flattering shade magically adds a kiss of tan to any complexion—yes, even the very fair-skinned (just use a light touch and soft, fluffy brush). It’s the perfect shade of matte bronze and the opposite of orange or glittery. Plus, you can swipe it below your cheekbones and use it as contour. You’ll rarely find an L.A. girl who doesn’t have this in her makeup arsenal.
Duo Eyelash Adhesive ($16)
Eyelash adhesive? Hear us out. Byrdie’s associate features editor Amanda swears that L.A. girls love their false lashes (truth) and thus always have eyelash glue in their bags in case one comes loose. “I always have it, bloggers always have it, and anyone who wears falsies on the regular always has it,” she swears.
Glossier Balm Dotcom Universal Skin Salve ($36)
The constant sun (we know… woe is us) can take a toil on our skin, which is why we always have a do-everything balm on hand. Glossier's versatile balm can be used on chapped lips, dabbed above the cheekbones to add a dewy glow, on rough elbows, and even on your eyelids (glossy lids: so hot right now).
Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil ($42)
The Kardashians’ taste isn’t always reflective of the general L.A. public, but we will say that their penchant for Anastasia Beverly Hills reflects our own. Dig through any L.A. girl’s bag, from Silver Lake to Santa Monica, and you’ll likely find a product from the brow guru’s line. Plus, she is based here in the City of Angels.
Colorescience Sunforgettable Loose Mineral Sunscreen Brush Broad Spectrum SPF 50 ($65)
We take our sun protection seriously in L.A., and most of us make sure to protect our skin before laying out and basking in the sun. Colorescience’s powder SPF makes it easy to shield ourselves from UVA and UVB rays—just dust anywhere and everywhere, and go. Plus, it won’t ruin our carefully applied makeup.
Chic and natural—our favourite low-key beauty look, and also a way to describe one of our favourite makeup brands. RMS is a staple among L.A. girls for its chic packaging, natural formulas, and dedication to eco-friendly beauty. The Lip2Cheek in particular is a cult hit for its creamy formula, nontoxic ingredient list, and soft, subtle colour payoff. Trust us—this product is mistake-proof.
