How to Wear Loose Glitter Like a Grown-Up
Glitter: our childhood crafting staple, a questionable Mariah Carey movie, and most importantly, something that can (and should) still be a part of your makeup routine. ‘Tis the season for all things shiny and bright, after all, and your beauty look should be no exception. If you’ve been eyeing that pot of loose glitter in the far depths of your makeup drawer, now is the time to act. Need inspiration? Keep scrolling for four ways to wear loose glitter like a grown-up!
Glitter newbie? Try using lining your eyes with it for a simple yet effective pop of sparkle. If you’re working with loose glitter, the easiest way is to press it into your lash line after you’ve already lined your eyes. For lighter glitter colours, use a glitter-bonding primer, like Too Face’s Shadow Insurance Glitter Glue ($20). It dries to an invisible finish and will make any lighter, iridescent glitters pop without the need for liner!
The beauty of loose glitter is in the application—as in, you can literally use your finger to apply it. Here’s an idea: Add a holiday spin to your go-to smoky eye with just a dab of gold glitter. Press the glitter into the center of your lid once, then press whatever is left over into the inner corners. (You can use an eye shadow brush for this too, though we find that a clean finger is just as effective.)
The easiest way to upgrade any manicure? Pour some glitter on it. Paint two coats of your favourite holiday polish, place your digits over a piece of paper, then sprinkle away. Pour the rest of the glitter back into the pot for future use, then use tape to clean up any glitter that gets stuck on your fingers. Seal it all off with a shiny top coat and your fingers are ready for the festivities!
Loose glitter and your lips might sound like a very, very bad idea (especially considering all the food you intend to consume this holiday break), but why not take a risk and channel the fairytale allure of Rodarte’s F/W 14 runway? If you’re itching for a beauty risk, we dare you to mix loose glitter in with your favourite holiday lipstick, like makeup artist Jame Kaliardos did backstage at Rodarte. According to him, the glitter surprisingly managed to stay in place for the most part—encouraging, no?
