3 Expert-Approved Acne Treatments You Can Make in Your Kitchen

Accordingly, today we’re sharing some lesser-known, do-it-yourself (and, thus, inexpensive) ways to treat blemishes.

Sweet potatoes are naturally delicious, and it turns out that they can also do wonders for acne. Dr. Ava Shamban of AVA MD actually suggests sweet potato fries as a great snack to consider for skin (we need no convincing there). Just how does the delicious, healthier version of a traditional tuber work on your behalf? “The food is high in beta carotene, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C,” Shamban explains. “Nourishing skin with these vitamins encourages production of sebum.” And sebum is what “protects the skin from bacteria and other acne-causing organisms,” she says.
You probably know salicylic acid is a power-hitter of an ingredient when it comes to spot-treating and widespread acne. But did you know there’s an inexpensive, and concentrated version of it sitting in your medicine cabinet right now?
Global skincare expert and owner of Beauty Park Medical Spa in Los Angeles, Jamie Sherrill gave us the following no-frills trick: Take a few pills of uncoated aspirin (which has salicylic acid), and crush, adding in a few drops of water to dissolve them. Mix into a paste, slather on your skin, and wash off after it dries. Sherrill says you can leave the mask on your skin anywhere from five to 15 minutes for an all-over treatment, or spot-treat with a cotton swab.
Besides being something that sounds like a dessert we’d like to eat, stat, Shamban recommends a DIY apple pie scrub to get rid of dead skin cells that clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts. Mix together a cup of applesauce—organic or homemade—two tablespoons of green tea leaves, three tablespoons brown sugar, and two tablespoons olive oil. Once you have a light, fluffy paste, massage onto a clean wet face and rinse off with room-temperature water.
And remember that it’s always important to take care of your acne, says Shamban. Blemishes left untreated can carry lifelong damage that can only be treated with scar-reducing remedies like Bellafill.
