Your Healthy Skin Plan: What to Eat Before, During, and After Flying
We applaud those of you brave enough to whip out an entire in-flight skincare regimen. We, however, have yet to muster up the confidence to don an eye mask in public. Travelling can do a number on your skin, but luckily, with the proper diet precautions, you can help prevent any post-flying skin freakouts. What, pray tell, are those precautions? For that, we called in international wellness and nutrition expert (and frequent flyer), Jessica Sepel.

“Before, after, and even during your trip, be sure you’re getting your greens in,” Sepel says. She recommends green smoothies packed with kale, spinach, green apple, mint, and banana. Green vegetables boost hydration and keep your skin glowing, thanks to their liver-cleansing properties. “And be sure you’re getting lots of salads with fresh veggies—pack one for the trip, and seek out healthy options once you reach your destination too.”
Of course if you really want beautiful skin, you should eat clean all the time, but when you’re travelling it’s especially important. “You really are what you eat, and sugar, alcohol, and processed foods do a number on your complexion,” Sepel says. “They’re inflammatory, and can create toxic buildup, which dulls and dehydrates your skin.” Sadly, that means you should skip the packet of pretzels and the glass of red wine.
Sepel says it’s best to stick with whole, fresh foods. Pack raw nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables in your carry-on. Or prepare Sepel’s Skin Glow Balls to snack on during your flight. “They’re gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, and packed with ingredients that will make your skin glow,” Sepel says.
Sepel likes to bring B complex vitamins with her when she flies. “They keep you looking and feeling energised.” She also recommends zinc to keep your immunity system strong and prevent inflammation. “I also bring whole food green powder and vitamin C powder with me; they’re easy to mix with water when travelling,” she says.
You already know this, but it’s worth repeating and happens to be Sepel’s number-one healthy skin tip for before, after, and during a flight. “Drink two litres of water daily, and avoid dehydrating substances like caffeine, alcohol, and salt as much as you can. This will prevent water retention and other issues associated with dehydration, which will most definitely show up on your skin!” Carry a refillable water bottle with you on the flight so that you can fill up often. As long as it’s empty, your favourite aluminium or glass bottle will make it through security.
“If you need a little variety from all the water you’re drinking, mix it up with dandelion tea,” Sepel says. The tea helps reduce fluid retention, or you can try chamomile tea to soothe your system. Any caffeine-free herbal teas are a good choice.
