How to Create the Ultimate Motivational Workout Playlist
Georgia Magree (or GG Magree as she’s better known) is the ideal person to advise us on how to compose a motivational workout playlist. When the L.A-based DJ isn’t busy supporting Pharrell, touring with Rita Ora, playing for Chanel or hanging out with bestie Vanessa Hudgens, she works out a “tonne”. We reached out to Magree for her tips on building a workout playlist so good it’ll result in a new PB, and she delivered. Not only did she divulge her pro tips, she crafted a motivational Spotify playlist just for you, dear reader, so all you need to do is hit play. Keep scrolling for Magree's workout playlist and tips on how to build one of your own.
Now is not the time to tee up your favourite acoustic rendition of Summertime Sadness... Magree advises selecting tracks with strong bass lines to get your adrenaline pumping. She personally favours genres like rap, dubstep, trap and metal to keep her energy up: “I like anything that has a strong fast-paced beat so I can run to it—I find if I follow the beat I push myself harder.”
If you usually switch on the radio and hope for the best, Magree says you’re not making the most of what could be a feel-good workout journey. “Start light, move heavy and finish on a track to set a feeling for your day,” says Magree. “I generally start with light tracks like Drake or Eminem to set the mood then make my way through RL Grime, Flosstradamus, 12th Planet, Skrillex and Parkway Drive to finish.”
We know that exercise itself can help us feel bright and alert but have you given thought to how your workout tracks can enhance (or detract from) your emotions? “Pick lyrics that relate to how you’re feeling on the day; the more you feel the music the more you’ll feel yourself!” says Magree. Can’t argue with that.
