This week, we’re content-swapping with our friends at HBFIT! Short for Health Beauty Fitness, HBFIT is the brainchild of DJ, fitness lover, and all-around cool girl Hannah Bronfman and your guide to living a healthy, green juice–fuelled life. The HBFIT team will be writing about health, fitness, and Halloween candy on Byrdie, and you can head over to HBFIT to see a new beauty story from us each day (including but not limited to our editorial director’s fall skincare routine and all the ways you can use pumpkin in your beauty routine). On day three, the HBFIT team is sharing some yummy, healthy alternatives to Halloween candy. Enjoy!
Fact: Candy is one of the best parts of Halloween. Growing up, we would look forward to trick-or-treating for months before Halloween, and now that we’re older, we’re still hooked on all the sweets. We’d never want to deprive ourselves of delicious Halloween treats, but most of the candy bars and sweets out there are filled with artificial ingredients and added corn syrup. We’ve decided to share our favourite HBFIT-approved alternatives to classic Halloween candy, so you can satisfy your sweet tooth with natural ingredients that are both good for your body and taste delicious. Happy Halloween!
Justin's Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups ($10)
If you’re crazy about peanut butter cups, you’ll love this healthier alternative to the classic Halloween chocolates. Justin’s uses organic peanut butter and fair-trade chocolate in its cups, along with other natural ingredients such as organic cane sugar and organic cocoa butter. They come in dark, milk, and white chocolate, so you can mix and match! The ingredients in Justin’s peanut butter are high quality and natural, and their treats are addictive. You’ll never go back to regular peanut butter cups!
Annie's Bunnies & Bats Bunny Fruit Snacks ($10)
If you thought animal-shaped candy was only for kids, this healthy alternative will make you think again. Annie’s prides itself on using only natural ingredients in its snacks. In fact, all of its treats are completely free of artificial flavors, GMOs, synthetic preservatives, and growth hormones. Annie's Halloween-themed fruit snacks are made with real fruit juice and no high-fructose corn syrup, unlike the classic Halloween gummies.
These homemade treats are so simple to make and are a great alternative for Halloween cookies and brownies. Mix a cup of rolled oats with 1/4 cup of almond butter or peanut butter. Feel free to also add in any flax seeds, chocolate chips, coconut flakes, or vanilla extract for more flavor. After mixing the ingredients in a bowl, roll the mix into small balls and place in the fridge for about eight hours. We also eat these bites for a quick snack after a workout.
Yum Earth Organics Organic Pops ($10)
Lollipops are classic when it comes to Halloween candy, but the usual brands are filled with added sugars and high-fructose corn syrup. Yum Earth Organic Lollipops are vegan, organic, and free of any gelatin or corn syrup. Their all-natural flavours make for a delicious sweet treat on Halloween (or really anytime). We’re obsessed with the Pomegranate Pucker and the Mango Tango flavors.
If you love Peppermint Patties, you’ll be hooked on these DIY vegan treats. For the peppermint filling, you’ll need to blend together 1/3 cup of dried coconut flakes, 1/3 cup of cashews, 1 tbsp. melted coconut oil, 1 tsp. peppermint oil, and 2 tsp. of maple syrup or agave. Flatten the mixture into balls and place in the freezer for 30 minutes. For the chocolate coating, you’ll need 2 tbsp. melted coconut oil, 1/3 cup of cacao powder, 4 tbsp. maple syrup, and a pinch of salt and cinnamon. Stir all of the ingredients until smooth, then dip the frozen patties in the chocolate mixture. Chill for 30 minutes. Then hide from your trick-or-treaters because you’ll want to eat them all yourselves.
