Beach Babe: Beauty Secrets From a Hawaiian Model
Mahina Alexander has one of those faces you don’t forget. With dark hair that falls easily into salt-sprayed waves, naturally sculpted cheekbones, and wide blue eyes that reflect the ocean, the model of the moment is the epitome of a beach goddess—which makes sense, considering her father is surf legend Kala Alexander (to refresh your memory, we have two words: Blue Crush). A quick scroll through her Instagram (which features 127K followers and counting) shows that Mahina inherited her father’s passion for the ocean. “I’m a beach rat, so my main concern is staying hydrated and moisturized,” she tells us when asked for the secret to her flawless, well, everything. “I would describe my beauty style as simple—I like to look raw and real.” With that in mind, we chatted up the Hawaiian model and RVCA advocate about her entire beauty routine, from the sunscreen she counts on to last through an ocean swim to the secret hair line she uses for beachy waves (coconut oil is involved, natch). Judging from your Instagram feed, you’re out in the sun—or rather, on the beach—quite a lot. How do you keep your face from peeling or drying out?
Alexander: I try to keep my skincare very simple. I don’t like to overdo it. I’ll use Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser ($24) in the morning and follow it with the brand’s face lotion. I really love their products because they are very light and keep my skin super soft. I’d recommend anything from the line!
What about sunscreen—which ones are your go-tos?
Do you do anything to help your skin after a day out in the sun?
Alexander: To keep your skin from drying out after long days in the salt and sun, it’s a good idea to drink lots and lots of water and stay moisturized. I really like the Alba Body Lotions ($10). They smell amazing! The Cocoa Butter one is my favourite.

You have the epitome of “I woke up like this” beach waves—what’s your secret?
Alexander: I always used Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo ($22) and Conditioner ($22). I never use anything that puts sulfates in my hair—it really dries it out—so I always check the ingredients list for that. Also, I try to wash my hair with cold water as much as possible; heat is really bad for it. My hair is naturally curly, so sometimes I use the Brazilian Keratin Treatment Shampoo ($8) and Conditioner ($8) from OGX to tame my mane! As soon as I get out of the shower, I brush my hair and put Moroccanoil Treatment ($43) on the ends.
Any hair DIYs?
Alexander: Once a week, I'll load my hair up with coconut oil and sleep with it in.
Us too! What about any native Hawaiian hair brands you love?
Alexander: My Sunday Secret has some really great products for beachy waves and hair growth! The founder makes things with rosemary, lavender, and coconut oils. They smell amazing and make great improvements in the way your hair looks and feels.
What’s your go-to hairstyle for a day at the beach?
Alexander: I like to keep my hair in loose braids, mostly because it gives me nice waves afterwards!

You’re a natural beauty, clearly. But when you do wear makeup, what products do you reach for?
Alexander: I keep my makeup pretty basic. When I do wear it, I use Clarins Skin Illusion Foundation (it's actually more like tinted sunscreen/moisturizer) just to brighten up my face, Chanel Waterproof Inimitable Waterproof Mascara ($32), Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof ($32) to add some wings on the corners of my eyes, and maybe a little light brown, nude, or golden eye shadow.
What lip product do you always have in your purse—or rather, beach bag?
Alexander: I use Maybelline Baby Lips ($5). My lips get dry so easily, I need to be sure to keep at least 10 of them around at all times, since I lose them so easily! I probably only wear makeup 12 days out of the month, though.
