6 Things Gwyneth Paltrow Eats for Better Skin
There’s really no need to describe Gwyneth Paltrow, considering her first name has gradually become an adjective itself. “That kale salad with goji berries is so Gwyneth” and “That alcohol detox is so Gwyneth of you” are actual sentences we wouldn’t be surprised to overhear, if only because our headquarters are in L.A. (which, as a city, is also very Gwyneth). So what does being “Gwyneth” really mean? One might interchange it with words like “balanced” or “healthy”; “effortlessly enviable” is another phrase that comes to mind. Whatever the association is, and however you feel about the lifestyle guru, you can’t deny the desire to learn more about her wholesome, holistic life—there’s a whole website dedicated to it, after all. In the interest of living a more GP-like existence (and just in the name of idle curiosity), we combed through the Internets to find out the foods Paltrow eats that contribute to her smooth, maddeningly radiant skin. We expected to find crazy herbs and brews—this is the woman who waxed poetic about vagina steams, after all—but were surprised to find that the foods GP eats for glowing skin are actually pretty… normal. Well, normal for Paltrow, that is.

Dubbed “GP’s Morning Smoothie” in Goop’s 2016 Detox, this smoothie is made with ingredients like vanilla mushroom protein powder, maca, and something called ashwagandha. The recipe calls for a teaspoon of any Moon Dust from Moon Juice’s line of health and beauty dusts; Beauty Dust ($65) promises a glowy complexion and healthy hair.

We’ve talked about the benefits of bone broth already, and it turns out Paltrow recommends sipping on them, too, for plumper skin. Goop notes how it’s great for elasticity of your skin, since it’s full of collagen (which has yet to be scientifically proven, but we’ll roll with it), as well as skin-loving ingredients like calcium, magnesium, and essential amino acids. Under Paltrow’s favorite snacks on Goop is something called the Crunchy Kale Salad With Blood Orange Vinaigrette. The description calls the combination of raw and crunchy baked kale a “revelation,” and touts it as being full of iron, good fats, and antioxidants—“great for your body, both inside and out.” We’ll take two helpings, please.

Oil pulling has been used for centuries in ayurvedic practice for a variety of benefits, both health- and beauty-related; whiter skin, healthy gums, and clearer skin are just a few. Unsurprisingly, Gwyneth Paltrow has shared that she’s on the oil-pulling train, too, and revealed in a Twitter Q&A that she prefers to oil-pull with cold-pressed, organic sesame oil. Sure, it's not exactly something she's eating (you spit the oil out after swishing it in your mouth for 10 to 15 minutes), but close enough.
In her latest cookbook, It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great ($20), Paltrow shares a beautifying smoothie made with goji berries (which she soaks overnight until they “become plump”). Goji berries have been used since ancient times in China to improve skin texture, so we’re not surprised Paltrow picked up on the trend. See below for the recipe from her cookbook:
1 generous tbsp. goji berries, soaked in water overnight and drained
30-40 g. fresh raspberries
3 large strawberries, stems discarded
1 tbsp. manuka honey
3 tbsp. goat's milk yoghurt
1 tbsp. coconut oil
240 ml. unsweetened almond milk
Blend everything together in a powerful blender until completely smooth and drink.
