11 Things All Beauty Girls Do in Private
After reading (and completely relating to) Who What Wear's rundown of everything stylish people do in private, I thought I'd tap all my favourite beauty junkies for a closer look into their alone time, and share my own secrets as well. We all love makeup, skincare elixirs, and hair potions—but how do we interact with them when our S.O.s leave the premises and our roommates are out of town? Funnily enough, they're just as interesting and bizarre as you'd expect.
Keep reading for a list of the good, the hilarious, and the oh-so embaressing.
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask Pack of 4 ($120)
There's nothing more reviving for dull, stressed out skin than a face mask. I love to smooth one on in the morning while I make coffee and my skin looks fresh and plump by the time I get to work. Of course, they make you look a bit like Freddy Krueger for 20 minutes, so I opt to apply why I'm all by my lonesome.
Zoeva 321 Brow Comb ($15)
Our associate editor Victoria divulged that she's become obsessed with this oddly dangerous trick. She does it at the office, at home, the works. While I'm all about caring for your lashes, I'd recommend investing in a lash comb if you're looking for a safe way to keep them long, fluttery, and properly separated.
Tweezerman Skin Care Tool ($27)
Faith, our wonderful editorial director, does her own blackhead extractions—usually late at night and for no reason at all. She says, "I cleanse my face, then use tissue paper and just squeeze them out on my nose, which probably isn't doing any wonders for my skin or pores, but it's so satisfying." If this is something you can't help but get into as well, make sure your hands are clean and you're using an appropriate tool. Otherwise, you'll have to deal with pesky scars and irritation afterward.
Make Up For Ever Artist Palette Volume 2 ($68)
Faith also can't help but venture into uncharted makeup territory when she's alone. (I find myself doing the same thing all the time.) "When I've gotten some fun, bold makeup products, I'll experiment with it and do a full face of makeup, complete smoky eye, and lipstick—then wash it all off before bed," she admits. "You never learn if you don't experiment! It's a risk-free way to try out new looks and products."
Vita Coco Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil ($11)
Oil-pulling is an ancient ayurvedic practice that promises healthier gums, whiter teeth, and clearer skin. (Faith documented her experience with it.) Essentially, you're meant to swish coconut oil in your mouth for 15–20 minutes a day. It doesn't taste good. But it works, so I do it when I'm alone and there's no one there to judge me.
Smashbox Step by Step Contour Kit ($71)
I have talked to every makeup artist under the sun about contouring. But it's hard! And confusing. And if there's any chance I'll be able to learn how to do it, it'll be in the privacy of my own bathroom where I can watch (and rewatch) vloggers go through it step by step. Just so you know, I still can't do it. But that's the fault of my clumsy hands and my often can't-do attitude. You can certainly learn by reading this.
Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar ($8)
This spicy potion promises to banish belly fat, improve gut health, and keep the bugs away all the same time. But the faces I make as I wash it down are not the most attractive. Read: I look like a scared lunatic, but I'll do just about anything for beauty.
