Diane Kruger on Doing Her Own Makeup and Why She Doesn’t Contour

Lisa Patulny

In this Old Hollywood inspired shoot for Violet Grey, Diane Kruger channels starlets of yesteryear, playing with wigs and makeup, and lounging around on set. The results? Breathtaking. Even so, it’s the accompanying interview that really has us talking.

In it, the actress reveals she does her own makeup: “I was always surrounded by great makeup artists when I was modelling and learned a lot from them.” Kruger goes on to say she prefers to “let the dress do all the talking” and steers clear of contouring and heavy foundation, playing up her naturally bold brows instead.

Product-wise, Kruger names Oribe’s Côte d'Azur Hair Refresher and Dry Texturizing Spray as her two never-fail beauty items, calls Thai massage a “necessary indulgence” and says red lipstick reminds her of Paris. See? She’s just like us. (Except we’re not friends with Karl Lagerfeld or dating Joshua Jackson…)

Behind the scenes, makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua used Chanel products to transform Kruger into a modern day version of an OG movie star. Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup ($77) and Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder ($80) were used to create her flawless complexion, and that perfectly punchy coral lip was the result of Lèvres Precision Lip Definer in Nectarine ($44) mixed with a deeper shade of lipstick. Keep scrolling to see the rest of the shoot!
